Nike Cross Nationals Promise to be a Family Affair for a Dozen Teams, With 14 Sets of Siblings CompetingPublished by
Newbury Park boasts one set of brothers, a pair of sisters as well as a brother-sister combination at NXN; North Spokane, Saratoga Springs and Summit all feature twin sisters, with Dakota Ridge and Stevens Point lineups highlighted by twin brothers By Erik Boal, DyeStat Editor PORTLAND – The sister tandem of senior twins Fiona Max and Izzy Max have been front and center all season for Summit High, the reigning Nike Cross Nationals champions scheduled to compete Saturday as Central Oregon XC at Glendoveer Golf Course. But they aren’t the only siblings who will factor prominently in the success of several high-profile teams in Portland, as 14 families will be represented by multiple athletes in the boys and girls championship races. WATCH NIKE CROSS NATIONALS LIVE WEBCAST Newbury Park boasts the distinction of being the only group to be represented by a sister tandem, a pair of brothers, as well as a brother-sister combination. Boys individual favorite Nico Young, a senior, is joined by freshman brother Leo Young. And junior Fiona Hawkins also has a freshman sibling in sister Ailish Hawkins, with sophomore Samantha McDonnell also competing for Newbury Park, in addition to junior brother Tommy McDonnell. The only other group to have a brother-sister pair is Jesuit, competing as Portland XC, with junior Jack Bennett and freshman Maggie Bennett. There are nine sets of siblings competing in the girls championship race, with the Max twins joined by North Central senior twins Erinn Hill and Mia Hill competing for North Spokane XC, as well as Saratoga Springs freshman sisters McKinley Wheeler and Sheridan Wheeler representing Kinetic XC. In addition to the Hawkins siblings, also competing Saturday are Buchanan junior Morgan Hutchison and freshman Grace Hutchison for Clovis XC, senior Brittany Helm and sophomore Rachel Helm for Muskego XC, Loudoun Valley junior Ricky Fetterolf and freshman Scarlet Fetterolf for Purcellville XC, Fayetteville-Manlius junior Grace Kaercher and Hannah Kaercher for Manlius XC and Pine Crest senior Tsion Yared and junior Mahdere Yared for Fort Lauderdale XC. Dakota Ridge senior twins Connor Ohlson and Blake Ohlson are one of three sets of brothers in the boys championship race, along with Stevens Point junior twins Jake Bourget and Josh Bourget, as well as the Young siblings for Newbury Park. With Summit’s Max twins, both Princeton commits, looking to secure back-to-back national titles for Central Oregon XC, and the Young brothers trying to lead Newbury Park to its first boys crown, the possibility exists Saturday for both national championship teams to boast a set of siblings.
