Running The Double: Athletes Eligible For Both NCAA Division 1 ChampionshipsPublished by
Runners Eye Rare Opportunity To Run NCAA Indoor and Cross Country In The Same Weekend By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Distance runners at the college level have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make up for lost time this weekend with the NCAA Championships in Division 1 Indoor Track and Cross Country compressed into a four-day window. More than 40 athletes have the potential to compete at both events, although not everyone on this list will do both. It's unclear how many will. What follows is a list compiled from the NCAA Indoor entries in the Mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters and matched against the teams and individuals who were selected Sunday for the Cross Country championships. Some athletes, like Washington's Sam Tanner, are likely to compete at the indoor meet Friday and Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., but have not participated in cross country this season. Still, it's possible that he could join the Huskies on Monday in Stillwater, Okla. BYU's runners are targeting one event or the other, and not doubling. Many others on this list are fully expected to compete in both events. We'll update this post as we learn more and follow these athletes through the upcoming weekend.
