Significant battles involving state rivals showcased across the country, with reigning California Division 1 champion Buchanan earning measure of revenge at ASICS Clovis Invitational after losing to Newbury Park at Woodbridge Classic

The showdown for California girls supremacy Oct. 9 at the 42nd ASICS Clovis Cross Country Invitational evened the season series involving Buchanan and Newbury Park at one victory apiece, with the Bears battling back on their home course following a 12-point setback Sept. 18 at the Woodbridge Classic.

Cherry Creek earned another impressive win over Colorado 5A rival Arapahoe at the Pat Amato Classic.

Jesuit High traveled across the border to beat some of the top teams from Washington, along with several Oregon counterparts at the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational.

Ann Arbor Pioneer dominated its fellow Michigan programs at the Portage Invitational.

And a familiar New York powerhouse produced its top performance of the season, with Fayetteville-Manlius winning the Chittenango Twilight Invitational.

With most of the attention in New York focused on the return of the Manhattan Invitational, Fayetteville-Manlius upstaged all the teams competing at Van Cortlandt Park a day earlier, relying on exceptional efforts from junior Hannah Kaercher and freshman Izzie Sullivan to lead seven athletes placing in the top eight.

Bethlehem Central demonstrated it could be a factor in New York in the postseason with its victory over New Jersey’s top program, Ridgewood, in the Eastern States Championship.

But Saratoga Springs and Fayetteville-Manlius remain the top two programs in New York with the state meet less than a month away.

After sweeping the top seven spots Oct. 2 at the Guilderland Invitational, Saratoga Springs followed Oct. 12 by producing the first eight finishers in a four-team meet against Shenendehowa Central, Ballston Spa and Guilderland, with sophomore Emily Bush winning both races for the Blue Streaks.

The top seven teams in the country remained the same, with Cherry Creek placing five scorers in the top 15, highlighted by a victory from Stanford commit Riley Stewart in 16:56.28, to produce a 20-point victory Oct. 8 over Arapahoe at Pat Amato, with the programs scheduled for a rematch Thursday at the Centennial League Championships.

Jesuit received a victory from Chloe Foerster, a University of Washington commit, to lead a strong effort against Washington programs Tahoma and Lewis and Clark, as well as 2019 California Division 4 state champion Sage Creek.

Ann Arbor Pioneer continued its remarkable season in Michigan, placing four scorers in the top 10 of the Division 1 race at Portage, including a runner-up finish from sophomore Rachel Forsyth in 17:26, trailing only unbeaten Holland West Ottawa junior standout Ariane Olson (17:12.8).

Although Newbury Park senior Samantha McDonnell, an Alabama commit, won a thrilling battle against Ventura freshman Sadie Engelhardt by a 17:02.03 to 17:02.28 margin in the Clovis girls championship race at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif., Buchanan prevailed against the Panthers at every other spot in the lineup to produce a 57-65 victory.

Mountain Vista High in Colorado, Lincoln High of Oregon and Conroe The Woodlands from Texas all enter the rankings following impressive performances.

Despite a victory from Valor Christian freshman Keeghan Edwards, Mountain Vista still edged the Eagles by a 59-64 margin at the Pat Patten Invitational.

Lincoln High finally showcased its strongest lineup of the season, with senior Kendall York leading four scorers in the top 10 at the Champoeg Invitational.

And The Woodlands finished runner-up to Lewisville Flower Mound in the elite race at the Nike South Invitational, with Natasja Beijen and Penelope Gracey both finishing in the top 10 for the Highlanders.
