Sherry Outduels Langon For Northeast Title With Course Record At Van Cortlandt Park

Gavin Sherry enjoyed a great race at the Eastbay Northeast Regional on Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park, but some of the joy was short-lived. 

Sherry broke Josh McDougal's 2003 VCP record with 15:05.8 in the Marty Lewis Boys Championship race and edged out New Jersey champion Marco Langon, who was second in 15:09.6. McDougal's record was 15:08.0. 

The Northeast regionals drew loaded fields to the Bronx for the return of the annual event that was cancelled in 2020. Sherry was 14th in the national finals as a sophomore in 2019, but this time he was hoping to take his twin brother, Callum, with him.

Callum Sherry has run with or near his brother all season and the two have both committed to Stanford. He was in 10th place with about 50 meters to go when his legs gave out and he fell. He got up and finished 43rd. 

Angelina Perez, ranked US#1 since her string of historically fast times in New Jersey this month, won the girls regional title in 17:21.5. 

A big surprise at second was freshman Zariel Macchia from Shirley, N.Y. (William Floyd NY), who was ninth two weeks ago at the New York Class A final. Macchia ran 17:42.7 and beat 2019 national finalist and 2021 Olympic Trialist Juliette Whittaker (17:44.7). 

Macchia was one of four New Yorkers who made the top 10 and will be joined on the trip to San Diego by fifth-place finisher Karrie Baloga, a 2019 national finalist, Emily Toth-Ratazzi (seventh) and Daphne Banino (eighth).
