TOURNAMENT BRACKETS

WEST REGIONAL

Desert Vista AZ 70, Orem UT 66

Orem built a 35-10 advange across five field events over the Arizona state champions, but it was the scored field event, javelin, that swung the outcome of the meet. The javelin is a scored event in both state meets, so it counts. And Hayden Gorovitz, Lucas Schiermeyer and Jake Salazar-Blair put a 1-2-3 finish together for nine decisive points in a close win over the Utah 5A champions. Desert Vista also held advantages in both relays and another 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 meters, with Roan Martinez, Jacob Gonzalez and Gabe Parham. Orem swept the top three spots in the high jump thanks to Carter Walker (6-9), Ethan Stoddard (6-4) and Cole Johnson (6-3.50). Desert Vista becomes the first Arizona boys team to reach the regional finals.

Humble Summer Creek TX 84.5, Fresno Central CA 51.5

For the first time in tournament history, there was a photo finish in the 4x100 relay. And it was no ordinary race. Summer Creek and Fresno Central both clocked 40.63 and so the points in that event were split, 2.5 for each team. The Texans rolled in the 4x400 relay, though, 3:09.92 to 3:14.78, and rolled overall, thanks to a steady barrage of performance across all groups. Fresno Central got a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 meters, led by Jeremiah Walker's 20.80w. But Darius Rainey won the 400 in 45.92 seconds, Aaron Davis soared 25 feet in the long jump and Donovan Bradley won the two hurdles races. One year after losing a tiebreaker in the regional semifinals to Century ND, Summer Creek is headed to the West final with a full head of steam.

EAST REGIONAL

Hoover AL 78, St. Thomas Aquinas FL 67

This dual went down to the wire, and Hoover's 1-2-3 sweep in the javelin can't be overlooked. Florida added the javelin as a state championship event and St. Thomas Aquinas is still adjusting to it, while Hoover has three guys throwing past 150 feet. Without the javelin, Hoover still wins by two points. King Mack won close races in the 100 and 200 for St. Thomas Aquinas, and also was part of winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Even with Mack out of the 400, the Raiders swept that event thanks to the fact five boys on the team run sub-50. Hoover scored 50 of its 78 points in the field events, and had winners in six of them, including Nick Ragland (javelin), Bradley Shaw (shot put/discus), Jordan Woolen (high jump), Collin Pate (pole vault) and Jay Avery (triple jump). Hoover advances to the regional final for the third time.

Shiloh GA 75, Butler Area PA 66

The Georgia 6A champions are on a collision course with Hoover of Alabama in an all-Southeast regional final. The Generals absorbed shots from CJ Singleton and the Pennsylvania state champs from Butler Area in the distance events, but got big points out of its hurdles and a relay sweep to gain an advantage. Christian Barker won the 200, 400 and long jump for Shiloh and his younger brother Eric Barker won the high jump and triple jump. Guinness Brown won the 100 meters and finished second in both the 200 and 400 for the Tornados. Butler Area was looking to join State College (2016) as a regional finalist from Pennsylvania. Shiloh will replace 2021 regional finalist Carrollton as it represents Georgia in the Final Four.
