Tuohy Splits 4:27 To Push Wolfpack Past Virginia, Virginia Tech; Cuthbertson Achieves North Carolina Girls All-Time DMR Record By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Phil Ponder photo (Tuohy); Kirk Walsh photo (Cuthbertson) Katelyn Tuohy, the recent collegiate record-breaker in the indoor mile and 3,000 meters, made quick work of her anchor leg Friday on the Distance Medley Relay at the JDL DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Savannah Shaw, Timara Chapman, Sam Bush and Tuohy ran 10:55.49 to break the track record. Tuohy split 4:27.61. The flat-track conversion gives the team a time of 10:48.55 that sits No. 2 on the NCAA qualifying list behind Washington's collegiate record. Shaw split 3:26.06 for 1,200 meters, Chapman was timed in 55.63 seconds on the 400-meter leg and Bush ran 2:06.18 for 800. Virginia placed second in 11:02.00 and Virginia Tech took third in 11:04.98. Virginia Tech won the fastest men's section in 9:38.34. The Hokies will get credit for 9:30.59 with the conversion. The Cuthbertson girls, competing as the Carolina Cavaliers, smashed the North Carolina all-time best with a time of 11:40.32. That's a US#1 and No. 12 all-time. It also exceeded the best by a North Carolina team outdoors (Pinecrest 11:54.73 in 2021). The previous state indoor record was 12:12.20 by William Amos Hough set last year. Alyssa Preisano ran 3:34.12 on the 1,200-meter leg, Rebecca Cornett clocked 1:00.62 on the 400 leg, Justine Preisano ran 2:16.09 for the 800 and Stella Kermes anchored in 4:49.49 for Cuthbertson, which is the top program in the country in the DMR and the 4x800 relay this season.
