Oklahoma State cross country All-Americans Molly Born and Taylor Somers, who placed 16th and 18th at the NCAA Division 1 final in November at the LaVern Gibson course in Terre Haute, Ind., join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the cancellation of all the fall championships, including the cross country meet that was scheduled to be held in Stillwater for the first time in program history. Born and Somers reflect on becoming the first pair of women's All-Americans for Oklahoma State in the same year since 1989 and only the fourth tandem in program history to achieve the feat in the same season. They also examine their exceptional improvement from the 2018 final, with Somers elevating from 137th place and Born ascending from 186th place. Born and Somers express their gratitude for the leadership of Oklahoma State head coach Dave Smith and how important a role his guidance has played for the entire program during the Coronavirus pandemic. They explore the potential racing possibilities that could be on the fall schedule for Oklahoma State, including an event planned for Nov. 21 in Stillwater on the date that would have hosted the NCAA final. Born and Somers speak about the growth of their teammates in an effort to build the necessary depth in order to compete at the Division 1 championship meet next year. They each assess what kind of development it will take to not only remain among the top competitors in the country, but also the work that will be required to take another step forward and reach an even more elite level. Born and Somers analyze how their success in cross country could translate to the track in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, and they hope to continue to benefit from challenging each other every day in practice. Both student-athletes also revisit what they have learned about themselves in the past five months, as well as how important the support of family and friends has been during the pandemic. Somers and Born also talk about their love for baking, with Somers having an Instagram page devoted to vegetarian and vegan items including carrot cake made from banana bread as well as a protein-based cookie dough, and Born sharing her favorite muffin recipes.
