Carrie Tollefson and Tim O'Rourke, 2014 Foot Locker Cross Country Hall of Fame inductees and announcers for the annual event at Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego, Calif., join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the third in a series of Foot Locker Virtual Chats and Webinars scheduled for 11 a.m. EST on Dec. 12, which would have been the actual date of the 42nd championship meet. They both share reflections from the first two Foot Locker Virtual Chats and Webinars, in addition to previewing the third installment, which includes the top three finishers from the memorable 2000 boys race in Dathan Ritzenhein, Alan Webb and Ryan Hall, along with two-time Foot Locker All-American and new national high school 5,000-meter record holder Jenna Hutchins. Tollefson shares her experiences as a three-time All-American, along with a two-time Midwest Regional winner representing Dawson-Boyd High in Minnesota, before winning NCAA championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track at Villanova, and U.S. titles as a professional. O'Rourke revisits the exceptional four-year girls run from 2005-08 that saw Jordan Hasay win twice, along with Ashley Brasovan and Kathy Kroeger each capture a national title. They both share their experiences broadcasting the event, along with being the hosts of the awards banquet at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego. Tollefson examines how special the girls race could have been this year with Hutchins competing against fellow two-time All-Americans Abby VanderKooi, Kate Wiser and Sydney Masciarelli, who also won the 2018 national title. O'Rourke analyzes the projected boys field that likely would have included Parker Wolfe, Judson Greer, Gavin Sherry, Aidan Puffer and Colton Sands. Tollefson, who hosts her own C Tolle Run podcast, expresses how significant it is for the 80 high school qualifiers to have New Balance pro athletes mentor them every December, with O'Rourke proudly connecting the history of Foot Locker champions and All-Americans to future U.S. athletes competing in the Olympics, including Tollefson in 2004 in the 1,500 meters. They confirm the date of Dec. 11, 2021 for the national championship race in San Diego, along with regional competitions scheduled for Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, in addition to potential plans for future Hall of Fame inductees.
