Emma Wilson, a sophomore at Huntington University in Indiana, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss becoming the fastest women's 10,000-meter runner in NAIA history Dec. 12 when she ran 32:38.56 at the Five and Dime Athletics Meeting in Columbia, S.C. Wilson also reflects on her impressive fall cross country season, remaining unbeaten against collegiate competition, in addition to winning four individual events and contributing to a 4x800-meter relay victory Nov. 19-20 in her indoor track season opener at Indiana Wesleyan. Wilson expresses gratitude for teammates Elijah Chesterman and Adrien Gentie for their support during her first career 10,000 race and the significant roles they played in allowing her to eclipse the previous NAIA all-time mark of 33:33.33 by Aminat Olowora of Oklahoma City in 2019. She also examines her potential to possibly secure the U.S. Olympic Trials standard of 32:25 in a future race. Wilson shares her desire to run a fast 5,000 on the track, especially indoors, with winning that event being her primary individual goal at the NAIA Indoor Championships, scheduled for March 3-6 in South Dakota. She revisits competing in five events over two days during her indoor opener and was grateful to secure qualifying standards for nationals in the 1,000, mile, 3,000, 5,000 and 4x800 relay, in addition to using the event as a dress rehearsal for the postseason. Wilson analyzes how meaningful it would be to help Huntington win another women's indoor team championship and how much she appreciates the opportunity to compete in relay events, either the 4x800 or DMR. She also looks ahead to the scheduled NAIA cross country national final April 9 in Iowa, and is grateful for the time in between both events, as well as the potential for Huntington to contend for a team title, along with her pursuit of the individual crown. Wilson speaks about how she remains focused on the day-to-day process of training and improvement, and doesn't worry about expectations for herself or the Foresters in an effort to minimize distractions.
