Georgia graduate student-athlete Amber Tanner, the 2020 Southeastern Conference indoor 800-meter champion and All-American, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss setting the Bulldogs' program record by running a lifetime-best 2:01.36 on April 17 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., and earning an Olympic Trials qualifyng time to compete in June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Tanner elevated to the No. 7 all-time competitor in the SEC, along with the No. 30 performer in collegiate outdoor history, edging Florida's Gabrielle Wilkinson, who ran 2:01.45. Tanner reflects on running an indoor-best 2:02.81 on Feb. 13 at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational and her anticipation for being able to compete again in the 800 outdoors. She reminisces about how significant it was for her to eclipse the 2:10 barrier for the first time at the 2017 SEC Outdoor Championships by clocking 2:09.18, and how she felt similar pride in Florida being able to run under 2:02 for the first time and celebrate another breakthrough performance. Tanner expresses her gratitude for her father, Dwayne, being in attendance at Percy Beard Track and James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville and how meaningful it was to share the experience with him. She reveals how the motivation was created to finish at Georgia on her terms following the cancellation of the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships last year in Albuquerque, N.M., along with the elimination of the spring outdoor season as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. Tanner explains how the veteran leadership and perseverance of women such as Kayla Smith and Marie-Therese Obst has created such a mentally tough and resilient group at Georgia, which is again in contention, not only for a podium finish, but a national team titile in June at the Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field. She shares how gratifying it would be to contribute points to Georgia's pursuit for its first outdoor title, in addition to how meaningful it will be to complete her Master's Degree in Advertising from the Grady School later this spring.
