Furman senior All-American Gabrielle Jennings, a 43-time Louisiana high school state champion at First Baptist Christian and NACAC Under-23 silver medalist, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to revisit her lifetime-best 9:43.48 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase April 23 at the 111th Drake Relays at Jim Duncan Track in Des Moines, Iowa, and elevating to the No. 2 collegiate competitor, along with No. 5 in the U.S. and 12th in the world this year. Jennings shares how valuable it has been to be racing against professional athletes on several occasions during the past year, including in August in Tennessee and South Carolina, as well as in February in North Carolina and Texas, and how much those opportunities have benefited in her preparation for the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships and Olympic Trials in June at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Jennings reflects on how much she has evolved and developed as an athlete since running 9:47.84 in the steeplechase at the 2019 outdoor semifinals at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. She reminisces about her opportunities to travel with fellow Furman standout Ryan Adams to compete unattached at races during the pandemic, and how much she has appreciated his recent success, including a 1,500-meter victory at Drake Relays in 3:38.74, which followed a personal-best 3:37.82 on April 17 at Eastern Kentucky. Jennings also speaks about her opportunity to train during November with New Balance professional athlete Stephanie Garcia, and how much insight, wisdom and perspective she gained from that time together. She analyzes her 4:12.60 performance in the 1,500 on April 10 at the Joe Walker Invitational at Ole Miss, and the lofty goals set for the remainder of the outdoor season, including running the 800 and 1,500 on May 1-2 at the Southern Conference Championships at Western Carolina. Jennings also looks forward to a potential opportunity in mid-May at Lee University in Tennessee as her final dress rehearsal for East Regional competition at the end of May in Jacksonville, Fla. She examines the depth of the Division 1 women's steeplechase field and shares her anticipation and excitement to participate in potentially one of the most memorable races in NCAA Outdoor championship history in June, looking to improve on her ninth-place finish from 2019.
