Freshman Jess Stratton and her coach at the University of Delaware, Ryan Waite, and Running Issues columnist Elizabeth Carey, join DyeStat editor Doug Binder to discuss the health and well-being of female distance runners. Stratton penned a letter challenging coaches of female distance runners across the country to educate themsleves on the dangers of lost periods, of disordered eating, and win-at-all costs mentality. Stratton was motivated to get involved after her own struggles with fueling and lost periods when her coach, Waite, held a frank team discussion about proper fueling for female distance athletes and the issues that lead to preventable injuries. Waite spoke to his team after hearing BYU coach Diljeet Taylor speak at a coaches' convention and then sought her guidance on how to approach subjects such as lost periods with his team. Carey, who wrote the book Girls Running with Melody Fairchild (2020), helps lead the discussion thanks to her years of reporting and studying the science of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
