Maggie Malone, a two-time Olympian and winner of a pair of U.S. national championships in the javelin throw and the American record holder at 221-1 (67.40m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in Tokyo after nearly walking away from the sport in 2018. Malone, also the collegiate record holder at 204-1 (62.19m) from her 2016 season at Texas A&M, reflects on placing 25th in qualifying in Rio de Janeiro and what another opportunity to throw against the elite athletes in the world means to her. Malone examines how she is in a different place spiritually than she was five years ago, which has created more balance for her mentally and emotionally in the sport. She expresses how significant the platform is for her speak about her faith and for other faith-based athletes to be able to share their testimonies. Malone also explains how instrumental the javelin community has been in supporting her and how meaningful it was to be able to improve on her own record July 17 at American JavFest in Pennsylvania after eclipsing the 2010 mark established by four-time Olympian and U.S. co-captain Kara Winger on May 29 with her 219-3 (66.82m) performance at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Southern California. She analyzes how inspiring and empowering it is to be able to compete again at the Olympics with the 35-year-old Winger, along with fellow American Ariana Ince, and the resilience and perseverance demonstrated to return to a global elite level following significant injuries. Malone speaks about how strong the culture of throwing is this year for U.S. women, with Valarie Allman, DeAnna Price and herself all achieving American records in the past 12 months. She also shares the challenges of competing as an unsponsored athlete and talks about the T-shirts she created and sold to help support her Olympic experience, including the bible verse of Joshua 1:9, which she has adopted as her theme for the year.
