Gabrielle Jennings, who recently signed with adidas to compete professionally after earning multiple All-America honors during her collegiate career at Furman and has decided to join Team Boss in Colorado under the direction of Joe Bosshard, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her first pro race Aug. 6 in the elite women's competition at the Sir Walter Miler at Cardinal Gibbons High in North Carolina. Jennings, 22, reflects on her 4:33.65 personal best in the indoor mile in February along with her lifetime-best 4:12.60 in the 1,500 at the Joe Walker Invitational in April, and how hopes to lower those marks racing in a strong field at the Sir Walter Miler. She revisits her collaboration with Taylor Dutch of Runner's World to document her experiences racing June 12 in her last NCAA Division 1 championship race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final at Hayward Field and placing seventh in a personal-best 9:38.24, along with preparing in Oregon for the Olympic Trials, in addition to deciding to be represented by athlete agent Ray Flynn and signing with adidas and choosing Team Boss. Jennings, a 43-time Louisiana high school state champion at First Baptist Christian, also explains the allergic reaction she endured in preparation for the Olympic Trials, which compromised her breathing and resulted in a fall during her June 20 prelim race and finishing 10th in her prelim heat and 22nd overall in 9:58.07. Jennings examines the similarities in the coaching philosophies of Furman's Robert Gary and Bosshard, and why she felt it was the right transition in order for her to compete at the professional level. She also expresses gratitude for being able to train during the fall with Furman Elite athlete and New Balance professional Stephanie Garcia, since Jennings only had outdoor eligibility remaining for the Paladins. Already a NACAC Under-23 silver medalist for the United States, Jennings analyzes what it is going to require of her in the next three years in order to be a contender to make national teams and contend for a spot on the American roster at the 2024 Olympic Trials. She shares her excitement for being able to train with established veterans Emma Coburn, Cory McGee, Aisha Praught-Leer, Dominique Scott, Laura Thweatt and Emma Bates, along with younger professionals Dani Jones and Maddie Alm once she arrives in Colorado, but not before also competing Aug. 15 in the 1,500 at the Ed Murphey Classic in Tennessee.
