Quanesha Burks, a U.S. Olympian and a two-time qualifier in the long jump at both the World Indoor and World Outdoor Championships, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing July 23-24 at the global meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Burks, an Alabama graduate along with a U.S. indoor and outdoor champion, prevailed June 23 at the USATF Championships with a wind-aided 23-2 (7.06m) performance. She also won the U.S. indoor crown Feb. 26 with a 21-6 (6.55m) effort, before finishing fifth March 20 at the World Indoor Championships in Serbia with a 22-2.50 (6.77m) jump. Burks reflects on changing her approach on the runway in between U.S. Indoor Championships and the World Indoor final, and the level of comfort she has established following the adjustment during the outdoor season. She explains her focus has been on consistently getting on the board and being able to finish the jump, which will allow her to consistently surpass the 7-meter mark. Burks reacts to Australian Brooke Buschkuehl achieving an Oceanian record with her wind-legal 23-4.75 (7.13m) effort July 9 at the Max Velocity Athletics High Performance meet at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, and how it reminded her that it will likely require a 7-meter performance to make the podium in Eugene. She revisits not being able to compete in front of a large audience at the Tokyo Olympics and missing out on advancing to the final by one spot, and how much Burks is looking forward to jumping in front of a home crowd at Hayward Field. Burks examines the importance in the preliminary round of being able to qualify for the final with one jump, in addition to being able to produce a big mark in the first round of the final to place pressure on the rest of the field. She emphasizes how instrumental her faith has been in allowing her to continue to excel as an unsponsored athlete and how significant the support of family and friends has been to allow her to be one of the most consistent American jumpers since she represented the U.S. for the first time, placing fifth at the World Under-20 Championships in 2014 at Hayward Field.
