Jorinde van Klinken, a Dutch record holder and recent transfer to Oregon after winning three NCAA Division 1 titles and producing the all-time collegiate discus throw mark of 230-5 (70.22m) at Arizona State, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing again for the Netherlands on Aug. 15 and 16 at the European Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany. Only 22, van Klinken reflects on competing at age 18 in the discus at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin after earning a bronze medal in the shot put earlier that summer at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Finland. She examines the challenging schedule that includes shot put qualifying, discus qualifying and potentially the shot put final Aug. 15, along with the discus championship Aug. 16. No Dutch female athlete has secured a medal in the shot put at the European Championships, with van Klinken and Jessica Schilder both in contention. The only women's discus medal earned by the Netherlands at the European Championships came with Ans Panhorst-Niesink capturing silver in 1946, a drought van Klinken is looking to end. Sandra Perkovic of Croatia is trying to extend her record to six consecutive European discus titles, with van Klinken being one of her primary challengers. She revisits representing the Netherlands in July at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and overcoming a leg injury to place fourth in the discus final with a mark of 213-2 (64.97m) after qualifying in the prelims with a season-best 215-5 (65.66m), in addition to placing 16th in shot put qualifying at 59-8.25 (18.19m). She reflects on China's Bin Feng producing a personal-best 226-9 (69.12m) in the first round of the discus final and how that changed the landscape of the competition for American record holder and reigning Olympic gold medalist Valarie Allman, along with Perkovic and van Klinken. She credits new Oregon throws coach Brian Blutreich, who also mentored van Klinken at Arizona State, for his guidance and leadership, especially with both of them transitioning from Tempe to Eugene in addition to preparing for multiple international competitions this summer. She speaks about the medal potential of the Netherlands in Munich, especially the country's elite female competitors in the throws, sprints, hurdles, relays and distance events, and how proud she is that the nation has more than 60 athletes participating during the seven-day event at Olympic Stadium.
