Thursday

Jenks runs an all-time Iowa best in the 3,000

Linn-Mar's standout, Stephanie Jenks, charged through a 71-second final lap to win the girls 3,000 meters in an all-time state best and meet record 9:26.87. That's a US#1 and in Iowa it broke Katie Flood's 2010 record of 9:27.25.

"When I ran (9:35.69) at the Lion Relays (a week earlier), I thought to myself, 'Just one more second per lap; I can do this,' " Jenks told Iowa TV station KCRG. "I am really, really happy. This means a lot to me."

The boys 3200 was competitive as well, with Albert Meier of Boone winning in 8:58.46 for US#19 in conditions that were certainly more challenging than Arcadia. Meier's time is the fasted by an Iowan in a 3200-meter race, but is short of Jim Eicken's 1975 all-time state best 8:52.0 for two miles.

Chandler Diercks of Clear Lake jumped US#5 23-10 and got every bit of the allowable wind (2.0) to win the event by 11 inches.

In the boys discus, Ethan Fenchel of Western Christian got off a 181-8 on his last throw to overtake Isaac Holtz of Monticello, second with 180-1.
