Labor Day Weekend: A-Fork leads charge at Grass Relays

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Everyone who follows the big-name cross country programs knows American Fork in Utah. Usually, it's the highly ranked boys in the news. But at the annual late-summer season kick-off meet, The Grass Relays, the boys and girls shared the headlines.

American Fork's boys, led by senior Zac Jacklin, tied the 2013 squad as the second-fastest ever on the five-person, 10-mile relay, clocking 51:48. Jacklin ran 9:57 for the fastest split of the day. Desert Hills was second with 52:58.

And American Fork's girls broke the 1999 meet record by 29 seconds with an overall time of 62 minutes, 3 seconds.

- Staying out west for a moment, freshman Annie Hill of Glacier (Kalispell) got off to a roaring start at the Libby Invitational on Saturday. She covered three miles in 17:31.35 to win the girls varsity race by more than a minute. Keep in mind that Hill is not the Montana freshman who made the preseason top 100. That is Bryn Morley of nearby Bigfork, who hasn't raced yet.
Should be a big year for the girls in Montana.

- In Alaska, at the Kodiak Invitational on Friday, Allie Ostrander and Levi Thomet won their races handily. Ostrander, who owns the fastest 5K in the nation so far in this new season, ran 17:34 for a 2-minute victory. Thomet, of Kodiak, won by 52 seconds in 15:23.

- Jesse Reiser broke 15 minutes and ran a nation-leading 14:53 at the McHenry County Meet. Check out DyeStatIL for more details.

- In Texas, Carter Blunt showed why he's regarded as the No. 1 runner in the Lone Star state with a 15:18.53 at the Marcus Invitational. ... At The Woodlands for Friday Night Lights, Julia Heymach of Houston Lamar (11:09) and Pedro Nasta of John Cooper (12:09.3) were the fastest finishers on a 2.5-mile course. The Cypress Fair boys and The Woodlands girls were the team winners.

- In North Carolina, Philip Hall, running for his new school, South View, won the Jungle Run Night race in a quick 15:10.22.

- In Colorado, at the Arapahoe Invitational, Katie Rainsberger of Air Academy (18:30) and Zach Alhamra of Pine Creek (15:59) got their season off on the right foot with victories. The Mountain Vista boys and Pine Creek girls also collected early season hardware against strong fields.

- In Florida, Brandon Marquez posted a strong 15:23 at the Wickham Park Jamboree. He won by 27 seconds.

- In Michigan, Sarah Kettel of Capital Home School ran under 17:30 for the second time in August with a 17:26 at the Yellowjacket Invitational. Kettel, a junior who won by a minute and 19 seconds, has improved dramatically since track and field season, when her 3200 best was 10:51.24.

- At the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, in Edmonton, Canada, Linn-Mar IA junior Stephanie Jenks finished 18th in 1:05:42. It was a quick turnaround from her silver medal performance at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China just a week earlier. She ran the 5K in 17:59 – sixth fastest out of the 53 competitors.
