New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory, December 26th – Shortly after the holiday bustle, the Northeast’s leading track and field athlete’s stepped through The Armory’s doors to compete at the North Shore Invitational.

During his first indoor race of the year, Jack Jibb of Monroe-Woodbury HS was able to run a US number seven time of 2:31.52 to take the boys 1000m. Mike Grady of East Meadow HS and Michael O’Leary of St. Anthony HS battled for second and third, finishing in 2:32.28 and 2:32.97, respectively.

Luke Germanakos had a breakout season last year, taking second at the New Balance Games and winning an NY State Championship title in the 600m. The Lynbrook HS athlete started this season right where he left off, finishing strong to take the boys 600m in 1:21.19.

During the bell lap, Eric Van der Els of McMahon HS was able to separate from the boys 3200m field. Els’ 9:30.79 effort was good enough to rank within the nations top 10 fastest times for the event. Kevin Hazelwood of Brewster HS followed shortly behind in 9:31.00.

O’Leary’s teammate, Pat Tucker was able to take the US number one spot in the boys 1600m, coolly running a time of 4:17.93.

Seth Wilson of Monroe-Woodbury HS outleaned Devonte Clarke of Danbury HS to win the boys 55m. The two sped down the track to finish in 6.61 and 6.64, respectively.

While there was plenty of action on the track, there was an epic battle in the boys high jump. Zavier Jean-Charles of Valley Stream North HS, Sondy Jean-Baptiste of Huntington HS, Mike Morrow of Danbury HS and Connor Langdon of Eastport HS all cleared 6-2.00, but it was Jean-Charles who was able to win the event on attempts.

One of the many highlights of the meet came from Warwick HS’s Derek Dibona, who soared to a US number one mark of 16-00.00 in the boys pole vault. Dibona’s teammate, Collin Maggiolo was able to out-due the long jump field with a mark of 23-02.50.

Emily Taylor of John Glenn HS, who took third in the pole vault at last week’s Bishop Louglin Games, won the event at the North Shore Invitational, clearing 11-06.00.

Paige Duca of Friends Academy ran away from the pack and into the US number two spot in the girls 1500m (4:50.09).

The multifaceted Kathleen Cibuls of Bayport-Blue Point HS took the girls 600m in 1:39.92. Jasmine Davis of Hauppauge HS fought Cibuls to the line, but fell just short of the win, running 1:40.00.

Northern Highlands HS standout Catherine Pagano dominated the girls 1000m field with US number one time of 2:52.19.

Diana Vizza of North Shore HS was also able to secure a national top 10 time in the girls 3000m, running away from the field and stopping the clock at 10:17.77.
