Lane, Mareno put final stamps on N.C. state meet By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons broke the state meet course record in Kernersville, going 15:12.6 to improve upon last year’s runner-up finish. Lane had company for a while, as Mount Tabor’s Cameron Ponder tried to stick with him, but he pulled away in the second half of the race. Needham Broughton regained the title after losing to Mount Tabor last year and took the top spot on the podium for the fifth time in six years. Nevada Mareno of Leesville Road successfully defended her title by running17:27.7. That’s nearly 20 seconds faster than she ran last year, a result that could give her confidence as she heads toward Foot Locker South. Sara Platek of Ragsdale was 17 seconds back for second place. Cardinal Gibbons put forth a big effort and scored 38 points. Green Hope was second with 70. Chapel Hill swept the Class 3A team championships. David Melville from Northern Guilford ran 15:39.3 and won the boys race by 24 seconds. Emme Fisher from West Carteret won the girls race 18:26.9. Noah Graham of Brevard won the Class 2A boys race by less than a second, in 16:03.1. Lake Norman Charter won the boys 2A team title with 93 points. Anna-Kathryn Kilby from Forbush won the girls race by three seconds, in 18:54.8. Brevard scored 72 points to win the girls team title and Smoky Mountain was second at 107. The Walkertown boys and Franklin Academy girls won the team championships in Class 1A. Luke Bennett of Voyager Academy won the boys race in 16:22.4. Michaela Gammon won the girls race in 19:15.6.
