Mattox claims sixth and final Mississippi XC title

Kate Mattox started winning Mississippi state cross country titles as a middle schooler and she concluded her final high school season with individual crown No. 6.

Mattox, of Starkville, won the Class 6A title on Monday in 18:50.8. She was 48 seconds up on Hannah Pinter of Pearl.

“I feel especially blessed,” Mattox told the Clarion-Ledger. “Running is just something I always felt like was my thing, and I’m very fortunate and grateful to have this platform.”

Ocean Springs, which began the season with a big win at the Mobile Challenge of Champions in Alabama, won the 6A girls team title.

Giacomo DeLuca from George County won the 6A boys race in 15:53. Ocean Springs won the team championship.

The Oxford boys score 38 points to win the Class 5A title on Saturday with all five scorers in the top 11. Adrian Lockwood of Brookhaven won the race in 16:48.6.

Morgan Campbell of Saltillo won the girls race in 20:06.6. She led her team to the victory as well. Saltillo put all seven in the top 14.

In Class 4A, Rhett Robinson ran 17:09.2 and led Corinth to the boys team championship by one point over Senatobia. Lina May of Vancleave won the 4A girls race in 18:49, which was Monday’s fastest time (6A, 4A, 2A meet). Again, Corinth nosed out Senatobia by a single point.

In Class 3A, Saint Andrews beat Mooreville 41-43 to capture the boys team title. Dylan Allen, a sophomore from Mooreville, won the race in 16:56.8. Lauren Green of Kossuth won the girls race in 19:44.3 as eighth graders went 1-2-3. Saint Patrick won the team title with 41 points and Choctaw Central was second with 49.

In Class 2A, Gracie Mills of Potts Camp won the girls race in 20:47.2 and led her team to the win. Clayton Fulgham of East Union ran 17:18.4 to take the boys 2A title and the J.Z. George boys won the team title.
