Ka'Deem Wynn - There’s no question as to who this guy is, simply because, after this season, everyone knows who he is. Earlier this year, Tyrese ‘Smoke’ Cooper became a household name in the track and field world after he appeared to have no breaks. Just when you thought he was done, he’d do something even more spectacular than the last.

This was the case when, at the AAU National Jr. Olympic Championships, Cooper dropped an incredible 45.23 to win the 400-meter final, obliterating the rest of the field, along with the 15-16 year-old age group record and his own freshman national record, which he set just weeks prior.

Keep in mind that he’s not even seventeen yet.

Just prior to his travels to Texas for this historic run, his previous best was 45.69, which he ran at New Balance Outdoor Nationals. After that, he ran 46.16 at the AAU National Club Championships. All of those times are incredible, but, up to this point, much like his friend and former club teammate, Jamal Walton, he’d only cracked the 46-second barrier once, and it was plausible to consider maybe he was just tapped out for the year.

But after Cooper had taken a brief vacation to give himself a much-needed rest after a long season, Cooper was back and showed the nation that he wasn’t finished yet, and unleashed an insane final 400. This short rest could be in part credited to Cooper’s sudden drop in time.

In 2015, DyeStat Florida ran a story highlighting Cooper’s achievements as an eighth-grader and inquired about his plans for his freshman year of high school. In the interview for the story, he mentioned that he wanted to be the first freshman to break the 200 and 400 Florida state records. He may not have gotten the state record for the 200 (20.46 (+2.9) run by Kendall Williams in 2014), but he did succeed in getting the 400 record when he ran 45.23, moving Xavier Carter’s (Palm Bay High School, 2004) long-standing 45.30 into second place.

The all-time national record in the event is 44.69, set by Darrell Robinson (Tacoma Wilson, Wash.) set way back in 1982! Robinson remains the only high school runner to crack the 45-second barrier as the record is in its 34th year! Will Cooper be the second high school athlete to break the 45-second barrier? We saw what he was capable of in 2016. Now let’s see what he does in 2017.
