Here are 10 track event storylines to follow Saturday at the 50th Arcadia Invitational:

You can watch the live Webcast of the meet Friday and Saturday here

Back where she started

The first outdoor meet in the stellar high school career of Sydney McLaughlin was at Arcadia, competing on the 4x200 relay with her Union Catholic NJ teammates.

In her return to celebrate the meet’s 50th edition, there will be another first for the Olympian, competing in the 300-meter hurdles.

The focus throughout McLaughlin’s career has been on the 400 hurdles at the state, national and international level, but the Kentucky signee will take aim at the 300 hurdles meet record and national high school standard, both held by former Long Beach Wilson star Lashinda Demus.

In 2001, Demus ran 40.70 at Arcadia, then lowered that mark to the national record 39.98 at the CIF Southern Section Division 1 final.

Vacaville CA senior Jurnee Woodward, an LSU signee, has also had her sights on Demus’ 300 hurdles record after becoming the No. 10 all-time prep performer last year by winning the California state title in 40.62. Norco CA senior Shae Anderson joins Woodward as the only two athletes in the field who have run under 42 seconds this season.

McLaughlin lowered her own national high school 400 hurdles record to 54.15 at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Woodhall on the hunt for historic double

Not since Elzie Coleman of Newburgh Free Academy NY in 2004 has a sprinter swept the boys invitational 200 and 400, but Syracuse UT senior Hunter Woodhall has the potential to achieve the feat after securing medals in both events at the Rio Paralympics.

Woodhall has personal bests in the 200 of 21.12 and 46.7 in the 400. He ran 22.57 and 50.47 in his Arcadia debut last year, but enters the meet this season having run 22.22 and 47.32.

The presence of Lakeside GA sophomore Brian Herron and North Canyon AZ junior Tyrees Moulton make the 200 and 400 showdowns some of the most anticipated of the meet.

Clash of champions

Nike Cross Nationals winner Brie Oakley of Grandview CO and Foot Locker National title holder Claudia Lane of Malibu CA have only squared off once in cross country – with Oakley prevailing by 26 seconds in September at the Woodbridge Classic in September – but their showdown in the girls invitational 3,200 meters is one of the most anticipated of the meet.

Alexa Efraimson of Camas WA set the meet record in 2014 by clocking 9:55.92. Oakley won the New Balance Nationals Indoor 2-mile title March 12 in 9:56.05 and is pursuing the national high school outdoor 3,200 record of 9:48.59 set in 1996 by Thousand Oaks CA star Kim Mortensen.

Lane is the national outdoor leader at 10:12.21 from the New Balance Azusa Meet of Champions Distance Classic.

Rio Rico AZ senior Allie Schadler, with a personal-best 10:16.73 from last year, is also entered along with Annie Hill of Glacier MT, runner-up last season in 10:14.14.

Race for a repeat, potential record

Not since Luke Puskedra of Judge Memorial UT in 2007-08 has a male athlete won back-to-back titles in the 3,200 or 2-mile. But another Utah standout, Casey Clinger of American Fork, not only has a chance to repeat, but also pursue the 3,200 meet record of 8:42.30 set in 1976 by Thom Hunt of Patrick Henry CA.

Clinger won the 3,200 at the meet last season in 8:50.70 and also clocked 8:51.68 for the full 2-mile distance at the Brooks PR Invitational.

After 11 athletes ran under 9 minutes at last year’s meet, that number has the potential to be surpassed this season, with Connor Lane of Cardinal Gibbons NC, Finn Gessner of Madison LaFollette WI, Seth Hirsch of Millard West NE, Gabe Fendel of Hamilton Southeastern IN, Talon Hull of Weber UT and Dalton Hengst of McDonogh MD joining Washington standouts Tibs Proctor of The Northwest School, Mathew Watkins of Jackson and James Mwaura of Lincoln, in addition to California stars Cooper Teare of St. Joseph Notre Dame, Callum Bolger of San Luis Obispo, Luis Grijalva of Armijo and Michael Vernau of Davis Senior.

High hopes for hurdling heroics

Former Claremont CA star Kori Carter was the last female athlete to win consecutive 100-meter hurdles championships at the meet in 2009-10, a feat Agoura CA senior Tara Davis will try to duplicate.

Davis is among four entries ranked in the top six nationally – all running 13.52 or faster – along with Hoover AL senior Caitlyn Little, El Cerrito CA senior Kaylah Robinson and Vacaville CA senior Jurnee Woodward, making this one of the deepest fields in recent history.

Jasmyne Graham of Roosevelt CA set the meet record by clocking 13.21 in 2015, with Davis boasting the fastest personal best among the competitors at 13.38.

Bragging rights with the barriers

The boys 110-meter hurdles showcases an exciting showdown involving Upland CA senior Joseph Anderson, Kimball CA senior Deion Lightfoot-Shelton and Tolleson Union AZ senior Trey Johnson, who have all run under 14 seconds this season.

Anderson is also entered in the invitational 300 hurdles, but Lightfoot-Shelton – the national leader in the 400 hurdles at 54.35 – is scheduled to race in the seeded section and Johnson will compete in the 100-meter dash.

Roosevelt CA senior Anthony Easter has only run 14.07 in the 110 hurdles, but is the fastest entry at 37.15 in the 300 hurdles.

New York state of mind

After setting national high school indoor records in the 600, 800 and 1,000 meters, Rush-Henrietta NY senior Sammy Watson will pursue the meet standard in the 400 in her Arcadia debut.

Watson has an outdoor personal-best 52.69 from her sophomore year, with the meet record of 52.51 set in 2001 by Monique Henderson of Morse CA.

Watson captured World Youth and World Under-20 titles in the 800 the past two years and won races indoors this year at distances ranging from 300 meters to the mile.

Oaks Christian CA senior Carolyn Wilson and Marietta GA sophomore Sterling Lester should also be in contention, having both run under 54 seconds in their careers.

Middle distance mastery

Six of the top 20 athletes in the country are scheduled to compete in the invitational boys 800, led by Springville UT senior Haden Penrod, who ran the third-fastest time nationally April 1 by clocking 1:50.79.

No individual has run under 1:50 at the meet since 2012, but Penrod and North Paulding GA senior Ryne Bevan both have the potential.

Senior Dawson LaRance of Billings Senior MT, who won the Stanford Invitational on April 1 by clocking 1:53.10, could also provide a significant challenge, along with Bellarmine Prep CA junior Alex Scales.

Best in the West put to the test

The girls 800-meter invitational showdown will match elite talents from Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Washington, along with Lee’s Summit West MO junior Jana Shawver in a race that could challenge the national-leading mark of 2:07.19 set March 30 by Miami Southridge FL senior Kayla Johnson.

Reigning California state champion, junior Alyssa Brewer of San Ramon California, is expected to challenge for the victory, along with Chandler AZ sophomore Morgan Foster, Provo UT senior Kate Hunter, Centennial NV senior Karina Haymore, Carlsbad CA senior Kiley McCarthy, San Marcos CA senior Erica Schroeder and Del Oro CA junior Cathilyn McIntosh.

Golden state looks to reclaim gold

After Noah Lyles of T.C. Williams NV and Ian Mack of Green Valley NV won the past two years in the boys invitational 100-meter dash, California sprinters will look to return to the spotlight this season.

A talented trio from the Inland Empire – Rancho Verde senior Isaiah Cunningham, Yucaipa junior Asani Hampton and Vista Murrieta senior Javelin Guidry – each have the potential to win, all running 10.54 seconds or faster already this year.

Tolleson Union AZ senior Trey Johnson should also challenge for the title after clocking 10.57 on March 25 at the 77th NIKE Chandler Rotary Invitational.
