David Oliver Retires from Professional Track and Field, But Will Remain in the Sport as Howard University's Head CoachBy Adam Kopet Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports reports that David Oliver has retired as a professional track and field athlete. Oliver captured an Olympic bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles in 2008. He also won a gold medal at the 2013 IAAF World Outdoor Championships. Oliver ends his career as the #4 110-meter hurdler all-time and the #2 American. He set the American record in 2010 with a time of 12.89, which lasted until Aries Merritt broke the world record in 2012, running 12.80. Oliver held a top-10 world ranking for 11 consecutive years during his career. He held a top-four ranking eight of those years. He ran 12.93 or better four times in his career, a feat few have bettered. With his professional career over, Oliver will return to his alma mater, Howard University, to take the helm of the track and field program according to a Howard University press release. At Howard, Oliver was a two-time all-American on the track. He also played wide receiver in football. Oliver earned his bachelor's degree in business administration in 2004. |
