Former American Mile Record Holder to Retire from Coaching at Cal State San Marcos at End of Season

By Adam Kopet

Ken Stone of the Times of San Diego reports Steve Scott, former American record holder in the mile, will retire as coach of Cal State San Marcos.

Scott, 61, started the Cal State San Marcos program from scratch in 1999. His athletes earned over 100 NAIA All-American awards between cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. The women's cross country team won three straight NAIA cross country national titles from 2009-11.

As an athlete, Scott qualified for three Olympic teams, although he only competed in two, due to the 1980 U.S. Olympic boycott. He ran 3:47.69 for the mile in 1982, setting an American record that stood for over 25 years. Scott broke four minutes for the mile 136 times in his career, a world record.
