Sergey Shubenkov Makes Up for DQ in Paris with Fast Time at Gyulai István Memorial in Hungary

By Adam Kopet

Sergey Shubenkov did not have a good day Saturday in Paris. He was disqualified from the 110-meter hurdles for a possible false start. Two days later, Shubenkov, who competes under neutral status while the Russian Athletics Federation is suspended, improved his world lead in the event to 12.92 at the Gyulai István Memorial in Székesfehérvár, Hungary.

The race included reigning World and Olympic champion, Omar McLeod of Jamaica. However, it was Shubenkov who powered away from the field in the second half of the race to equal the No. 8 all-time performer. McLeod faded to sixth in 13.45.

Finishing third was the USATF champion, Devon Allen. It was an improvement in place from his fifth-place finish in Paris, but his time of 13.36 was just off the time he ran Saturday.

RESULTS

Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia was a clear winner in the women's mile. She ran a world lead and meet-record 4:24.29. That was more than four seconds ahead of second place. Kate Grace finished third in 4:29.33.

In the men's high jump, Mutaz Essa Barshim equaled his world-leading height from May 4 at the Doha Diamond League meeting. He cleared 7-10.50 (2.40m) on his third attempt. He then raised the bar to a world record height of 8-0.75 (2.46m), but missed on his three attempts at that height.

It was the first time since Sept. 5, 2014 that Barshim attempted 8-0.75 and the third occasion in his career.
