DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Christian Brothers Academy NJ Xavier CT
Current Prediction: Christian Brothers Academy NJ La Salle Academy RI
Note: The same five teams hold the top spots in the current Nike Northeast Regional rankings from the preview rankings in August. Christian Brothers Academy of Lincroft, N.J., looks to make it nine consecutive trips to Portland after a dominant win in the New Jersey Meet of Champions. CBA is again peaking at the right time and it would be a considerable upset if the Colts don’t secure one of the top two spots and an automatic qualifier to NXN. Behind CBA, it gets tighter. It would not be a major upset if any one of the next four teams earns one of the top two spots. La Salle Academy RI is the pick for that spot after defeating both Bishop Hendricken RI and Xavier CT in the New England XC Championships. Bishop Hendricken has run well all year and should be competitive, and Xavier CT surprised last year at NXR with its race of the year to secure a bid. Each of those teams could also make an argument for an at-large bid with a third-place finish given the depth of the region. An at-large selection has not come out of the Northeast since 2012 and with relatively down years in some of the other regions around the country, the region could pick up a third bid. One other team to keep an eye on in the Northeast is Haddonfield Memorial NJ, which opened the year at regional No. 5 and ran its best race in the New Jersey Meet of Champions, finishing second behind CBA.

Current Prediction: North Hunterdon NJ North Allegheny PA
Note: No team in the Northeast has qualified for NXN more than two years in a row. North Hunterdon NJ is looking to become the first to three-peat after returning all seven runners from last year's NXN squad. The team is favored to win the region. After North Hunterdon, the race for the second spot in the Northeast is close, although North Allegheny PA seems best placed to earn its first trip to NXN. However, Ridgewood NJ, Natick MA and Champlain Valley Union VT could all have something to say about that Saturday. Of those three teams, only Champlain Valley Union has qualified for NXN, but it last did so in 2011. |
