Note: New York has been a two-horse race in 2018. Fayetteville-Manlius maintains the top spot it has owned all year and is the clear favorite heading into the regional this weekend. F-M is looking to add to its record streak of 10 straight trips to Portland. It would be a startling development if the Class A New York state champions were not among the top two after scoring a miniscule 25 points at the state meet. Expected to join F-M in Portland is Class B Champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. This team scored 22 points in the Class B race and finished with a 16:31 top five average, well ahead of the next finisher in any class in New York. F-M’s 16:14 team average makes it a reach for Burnt Hills to bring home the title, but an NXN berth should be secured with even an average run. Hoping for either of the top two to falter are in-state rivals Corning-Painted Post, Smithtown West, Shenendehowa, Liverpool and Saratoga Springs. All of these teams has a realistic chance at a third-place finish Saturday. It doesn’t appear however, that a third-place finish will be enough to earn a trip to NXN, given that New York is not as strong as some of the other regions this fall.

DyeStat preseason picks to qualify for NXN: Fayetteville-Manlius Saratoga Springs
Current Prediction: Saratoga Springs Fayetteville-Manlius
Note: New York owns NXN. The state has produced 13 of 14 team champions. The top New York team has never finished worse than second. Most of that time it has been Fayetteville-Manlius that has owned the event, winning 11 of the past 12 NXN titles. The year F-M did not win in the streak of 11 straight NXN appearances (2013), the Hornets still finished second. However, this year's F-M team is down a bit from previous iterations. The team has closed out the season strong, but it will be a tight battle between the 11-time NXN champions, Saratoga Springs and Liverpool. In the Section 3 Championships, F-M and Liverpool tied for first place, with F-M getting the win on the tiebreaker. At state, it was Saratoga Springs earning a one-point win. When all three teams face each other again, it could be very close. Any of the three teams could come out on top. More news |
