HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite professional athlete Alice Wright, a two-time NCAA Division 1 cross country team champion and 10-time All-American at New Mexico, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her new online initiative of "Alice Wright Coaching" as well as her love of painting, with her latest completed artwork of a tiger being used as a design for NAZ Elite merchandise. Wright revisits pacing NAZ Elite teammates Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce and Lauren Paquette to a sweep of the top three spots in the women's 5,000-meter race at the KT Tape St. George Showdown in Utah, her first time on the track for a race in more than a year. She also reflects on her highs and lows in 2019, including personal bests in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters on the track, as well as road races of 5 kilometers and the half marathon. Wright talks about how important the presence of NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario has been during her transition to competing professionally, along with the experience of Aliphine Tuliamuk, Taylor and Bruce as marathon athletes. She looks forward to making her marathon debut, but doesn't know if the Virgin Money London Marathon will actually take place in October, and expresses her concerns over health and safety issues if it does. The British talent examines the issues facing international students attending NCAA universities, especially when it comes to obtaining and renewing Visas, and her reactions to the potential prospects of those international students being deported if their school was only offering online or virtual education during the 2020-21 school year. She also analyzes the challenges facing current international student-athletes on the New Mexico roster, especially those who have returned to their home countries during the pandemic, and what the future holds for them. Wright speaks about the importance of mental health and controlling what is in her own power during such a unique time, and is thankful for the opportunities to be able to mentor other athletes and play a role in their improvement and success through virtual coaching.
