Iowa fifth-year senior Laulauga Tausaga, the reigning NCAA Division 1 women's discus throw champion and seven-time All-American, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her role as co-chair along with teammate Antonio Woodard of the "Speak Your Truth" diversity committee, organized by members of the Hawkeyes' track and field program. Tausaga reflects on her return to San Diego during the spring and summer, and how she wasn't able to attend "Black Lives Matter" protests due to health concerns for the rest of her family during the Coronavirus pandemic. She revisits being injured during the fall, along with teammate Nia Britt, when they were both hit by a truck while riding a moped in Iowa City, and the recovery and rehabilitation that has been required to get ready for the 2020-21 school year. Tausaga looks back at last year and her ability to produce personal-best throws in the discus three times in a four-month span, including 209-9 (63.94m) in the qualifying round of the World Outdoor Championships in Doha, Qatar. She also shares the learning experiences of fouling out in the final, and how that has created plenty of motivation in her pursuit to not only make the U.S. Olympic roster next year, but also to return to the discus final in Tokyo. Tausaga talks about the possibility of challenging the collegiate discus record of 221-5 (67.48m) held by Arizona's Meg Ritchie since 1981, in addition to repeating as NCAA champion, and her opportunity to continue working with Iowa throws coach Eric Werskey as well as Britt, who will be returning as a sixth-year senior.
