Women's pole vault world leader and Nike professional Katie Nageotte, who cleared a lifetime-best 16-1.75 (4.92m) on Aug. 1 at the American Track League event at Life University in Marietta, Ga., joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her short, but memorable outdoor schedule, which also included a personal-best 11.91 seconds in the 100-meter dash July 29 at Life University. Nageotte not only reflects on her pursuit for the past two years of improving on her indoor personal best of 16-1.25 (4.91m) from the 2018 USATF Indoor Championships, but also her attempts Aug. 1 at 16-5.25 (5.01m), which would have set the American outdoor record. She examines her consistency of clearing at least 15-5 (4.70m) in five consecutive outdoor meets for the first time in her career, a streak she previously achieved during the indoor season in 2018. Nageotte shares the confidence and belief she has gained in working with coach Brad Walker and how significant her move to Georgia has been in advancing her career. She also expresses gratitude over the support of family, friends and training partners, who have helped her elevate to the No. 3 outdoor performer in U.S. history and No. 6 all-time in the world. Nageotte reveals that her ability to vault better outdoors this summer has come from spending more time indoors working on technique and improving her approach. She also revisits the opportunity to race against talented American sprinters in the 100 and the pride associated over running sub-12 for the first time in her career. Nageotte handicaps the best pure sprinters among the elite American female vaulters, including Sandi Morris, Kristen Brown, Kortney Ross and Jenn Suhr. Although she didn't have an opportunity to face her elite international competitors at the same meet this summer, Nageotte shares that she expects to face the deepest field in the history of the event next year, with her focus remaining on the Tokyo Olympics.

Katie,
I am so thrilled or you! I know what it like but I did not clear over 16'1 that is awesome! I am a past pole vaulter from the U of W but only got over 15 feet. Back in my day woman athletes were not competing in the pole vaulting but they should have been! You are going to clear over 17 in the Olympic Games I know you can do it!
