The 40th Foot Locker West Regionals are scheduled for Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. It marks the 21st year the regionals have been held at Mt. SAC.

The girls championship race is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. PST and the boys championship race will start at 10:55 a.m.

The top 10 individuals in each championship race advance to the Foot Locker National Championships on Dec. 8 at Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego.

Here are 10 storylines to follow at the fourth and final Foot Locker regional meet:

A rare double play

Not only is Kirtland Central NM standout Kashon Harrison trying to become the lone male athlete from the West Regional to return to the national final in San Diego, the senior is also pursuing rare back-to-back regional individual titles.

The last time the West produced a repeat boys winner was 1998-99, when Provo UT star Josh Rohatinsky achieved the demanding double.

Harrison covered the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 38.4 seconds last year at Mt. San Antonio College to become the first New Mexico male athlete to secure the regional crown since Eldorado standout Matt Tebo captured the title in 2006.

What would make a Harrison repeat even more impressive is that he qualified for Nike Cross Nationals by placing third Nov. 17 at the Nike Southwest Regional in Casa Grande, Ariz., but decided to challenge himself by chasing Foot Locker regional history.

Fahy seeks another family double

La Costa Canyon CA senior Kristin Fahy joined older brother Darren Fahy in becoming just the second brother-sister combination in state meet history to both win individual championships in their careers when she captured the Division 2 crown Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Now, she has an opportunity to make more history by joining Darren with the potential to become a regional champion.

Darren followed his Division 2 state championship in 2011 by capturing a regional crown. A victory by Kristin would give the Fahy family the distinction of having the only siblings in regional history to both secure individual titles.

Kristin won’t need any extra motivation, since the national final Dec. 8 is held at Balboa Park’s Morley Field, the same venue where she and her teammates captured San Diego Section Division 2 individual and team titles Nov. 17, in addition to the Sept. 15 site when they raced at the Mt. Carmel Invitational.

Golden state seeks gold rush

In addition to having multiple individuals capable of challenging for the boys individual title, California could also approach the seven national male qualifiers it produced in 2011.

Among the top returnees from last year’s regional final, two-time Division 4 state champion Anthony Grover of JSerra looks to improve on his 11th-place finish, with Concord De La Salle senior Connor Livingston and Palo Alto senior Henry Saul both looking to break into the top 10 after placing in the top 25 last season.

Arroyo senior Noah Hibbard and Long Beach Poly senior William Frankenfeld, who both didn’t crack the top 30 last year, could be significant factors after both placing in the top three in their respective divisions at the state championship meet.

St. Francis Mountain View seniors Colton Colonna and Eric Eng, who both raced at NXN last year, Nevada Union senior Garrett Gough, Bakersfield Stockdale senior Marcus Mota, Los Altos senior Owen MacKenzie and Newport Harbor senior Alexis Garcia are all potential qualifiers for the host state.

My favorite Martin

The momentum of the memorable season produced by Lehi UT junior Anna Martin has been put on hold since she has raced only once after setting the all-time 3-mile course record Oct. 17 by clocking 17:15 at Sugarhouse Park to win the 4A state championship.

But after winning the Pre-Foot Locker meet Nov. 3 at American Fork by 54 seconds, Martin will look to return to an elite level and qualify for her first national final after placing 14th at last year’s regional.

A victory by Martin would mark the first girls regional individual title for Utah, despite the state sending at least one female athlete to nationals for three consecutive years.

Martin might not be alone in representing Utah in San Diego either, with Lone Peak sophomores Eliza Arrington and Reagan Gardner, Corner Canyon senior Karli Branch, Ogden senior Kalli Caldwell, Desert Hills senior Bailey Brinkerhoff and Woods Cross sophomore Carlee Hansen all returning after placing in the top 25 last year.

No slump for former sophomore standouts

A year after both placing in the top five in the regional sophomore event, Dublin CA standout Christopher Middleton-Pearson and Skyline UT star Thomas Boyden are not only entered in the boys championship race, but have strong potential to qualify for nationals.

Middleton-Pearson clocked 16:24.3 to win the sophomore race last season, with Boyden running 16:48.1 to place fifth.

Middleton-Pearson finished eighth in the Division 1 state final, covering the 5-kilometer course at Woodward Park in Fresno in 15:14.4.

Boyden finished fifth in the Utah 5A state championship, covering the 3-mile course at Sugarhouse Park in 15:45.4.

Other juniors who didn’t compete in last year’s championship race that could have a significant impact Saturday include Corner Canyon’s Mark Boyle, who finished second in the Utah 5A final along with placing 12th at Nike Southwest Regionals.

Grantsville’s Porter Whitworth won the Utah 3A state crown and secured 17th at Nike Southwest Regionals.

Highland’s Leo Daschbach finished second in the Arizona Division 1 state championship, in addition to placing 19th at the Nike Southwest Regionals.

Reiss racing for sweet repeat

With two-time reigning regional champion Claudia Lane of Malibu CA not competing after returning to training recently following an IT band injury, only Bellingham WA senior Annika Reiss is back among last year’s girls national qualifiers.

Reiss placed eighth last season in 18:21.7. She is looking to follow Lewis and Clark graduate Katie Thronson in representing Washington in consecutive years (2016-17) at the national final in San Diego.

Reiss, who advanced along with Kristen Garcia of Sedro Woolley and Thronson last year, looks to lead a talented group of potential Washington qualifiers that also includes North Central sophomores Allie Janke and Erinn Hill, along with junior teammate Marie Taylor, Henry Jackson junior Anna Skoog, in addition to Bear Creek senior twins Andrea Markezich and Olivia Markezich.

Keeping eyes on Idaho

Idaho hasn’t produced a male national finalist since former Pocatello star Elijah Armstrong won the regional title in 2014 and the last girls athlete to advance to San Diego was Vallivue’s Mikayla Malaspina in 2013.

But those droughts could end in both genders Saturday, with Idaho Falls senior Zach Erikson and Bishop Kelly senior Nicholas Russell in the boys championship race, along with Mountain View junior Lexy Halladay in the girls championship race.

Erikson, the lone returnee in the group, finished 28th at last year’s regionals. He was second Oct. 27 at the Idaho 4A state finals, along with placing 19th on Nov. 10 at the Nike Northwest Regionals.

Russell captured the Idaho 4A state title and finished 15th at the Nike Northwest Regionals.

Halladay, who competed at NXN the past two years, secured the Idaho 5A state title, but wasn’t able to earn a third consecutive trip to Oregon after finishing 25th at the Nike Northwest Regionals.

San Diego showcase could be special

With La Costa Canyon senior Kristin Fahy expected to lead the way, it could be a potential homecoming for several San Diego-area athletes at the Dec. 8 national finals after Eastlake standout Patricia Miessner qualified for the championship last year.

Canyon Crest Academy junior Carlie Dorostkar, fifth at the Division 1 state final, could also qualify, in addition to Sage Creek junior Skyler Wallace, who led her team to its first Division 4 state championship with a third-place finish in Fresno.

Mission Vista sophomore Bella Longo, fourth in the Division 3 state final, and freshman Stormy Wallace, who took sixth in Division 4 to contribute to Sage Creek’s state championship, are also entered in the girls championship race.

Mission Hills senior Jonathan Velasco, 16th in the Division 1 state final, along with San Pasqual senior Franky Varela are entered in the boys championship race.

Freshmen with familiarity

Harvard-Westlake CA freshman Daniela Quintero and Anaheim Canyon CA ninth-grader Emma Hadley will be making their debuts in the girls championship race, but it won’t be their first time competing at the regionals.

Quintero was second in the girls open race last year in 19:03.4, with Hadley placing third in the same competition in 19:34.9.

Hadley and Quintero, who both competed Oct. 19-20 at the Mt. SAC Invitational, are among several freshmen girls with the potential to qualify for nationals.

Serrano’s Tiani Goeson, Granada Hills’ Sofia Abrego, Sage Creek’s Stormy Wallace and Clovis North’s Miliana Perez are also entered in the girls championship race, looking to become the first ninth-grader to qualify from the West since Montana freshmen Annie Hill and Bryn Morley both advanced in 2014.

The last California freshman female to move on to the national championship was Fiona O’Keeffe of Davis Senior in 2012.

Inspired to make another strong statement

In addition to La Costa Canyon senior Kristin Fahy and JSerra junior Anthony Grover, there are multiple other California state champions looking to extend their seasons by qualifying for nationals.

Sonoma Academy senior Andre Williams, the Division 5 winner, is also entered in the boys championship race.

Mayfield sophomore Audrey Suarez, the Division 4 champion, and Healdsburg senior Gabby Peterson, who secured the Division 5 title, are also scheduled to compete in the girls championship race.

At least one California girls champion has advanced to the national finals for the past six years, a streak that Fahy, Suarez and Peterson will attempt to continue Saturday.
