Record Setters Earn Readers' and Editors' Choice Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Matthew Boling

With 51.55 percent of the vote, Matthew Boling won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Mondo Duplantis with his second-place tally of 17.62 percent.

The Strake Jesuit TX senior continued his impressive season at the Texas 6A State Meet this weekend, showing that he could make an immediate impact at Georgia next year.

Boling opened his competition with the long jump. He took two jumps, but that was more than enough to take the win. His best and winning jump was a wind-aided 25-4.50 (7.73m).

Then came the 100 meters. Boling ran 10.13. That equaled the state record and equaled the fifth ranked prep all-time performance.

Boling was not done. He also anchored the Strake Jesuit 4x400 relay to victory in 3:10.56. His 400-meter split was 44.75, showing good range as a young sprinter.

Strake Jesuit came two points short of winning the team title. However, the Boling anchored 4x100 relay that finished third was disqualified for an exchange zone infraction earlier in the race. Boling took the team from seventh to third on his final leg.

To put some of Boling's success into perspective, until this year, he was primarily a 400-meter runner. As a junior, he had a best of 46.15. He ranked sixth in the 400 meters last year. The 100 meters is a new event for Boling. As a high school athlete, he did not race the 100 until this year. Counting prelims, he has a total of nine 100-meter races under his belt, including a wind-aided 9.98 effort.

The biggest question is whether Boling will continue his season. He has not yet faced the other top 100-meter runner in the country, Micah Williams of Benson OR. If they do race, it should be a good one.

Editors’ Choice: Parker Stinson

There were many great performances this week. DyeStat readers made a great choice in selecting Boling. He had a fantastic Texas State Meet. Other great performances include the DeSoto TX girls for breaking their own national record in the 4x100 relay and Duplantis for breaking the collegiate record in the pole vault.

However, this week's editors' choice goes to another type of record, an American record. Parker Stinson broke the American record for the road 25K at the USATF 25 km Championships Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich. He broke the record by 31 seconds, running 1:13:47 for the slightly longer than half-marathon race.

It was a dominating performance from Stinson who led from the start. He held a 20-second lead after 10K and continued to push until the end. He won the race by over a minute.

Stinson spent time in advance of the race training in Michigan alongside his coach, Dathan Ritzenhein. That preparation paid off as it was Stinson's first national title, making his performance even more special.
