INEOS 1:59 Challenge Team Prep for Eliud Kipchoge's Record RunPublished by
Pacesetters Practice on INEOS 1:59 Challenge Course in ViennaBy Adam Kopet The team behind Eliud Kipchoge's INEOS 1:59 Challenge held a test event in Vienna as they prepare the main event next month. A major part of test event was training many of the pacesetters who will pace Kipchoge as he attempts to run a marathon in under 2 hours. Bernard Lagat, who helped pace Kipchoge in Nike's Breaking2 Project, will once again offer his services. Other Americans taking part this past weekend were Paul Chelimo, Stanley Kebenei and Shadrack Kipchirchir.
Not in attendance during the test event, but still signed on to assist next month are Jakob, Henrik and Filip Ingebrigtsen of Norway. The three brothers have been some of the top performers in recent years on the track. Jakob will be 19 when the INEOS 1:59 Challenge takes place.
Kipchoge did not make an appearance at the test event. He remained at his training camp in Kaptagat, Kenya to focus on his build-up for the event. In addition to the pacesetters practicing formations and running specified paces, as outlined by a lead vehicle projecting laser light onto the ground, the team also built some of the barriers and gantries that will funnel the runners and mark the start and finish lines. The finish gantry will be left up for the next month in the lead-up to the final event.
The INEOS 1:59 Challenge is likely to take place Oct. 12 in the Austrian capital, but is operating under a window that stretches to Oct. 20, to account for adverse weather conditions. More news |
