WEST REGIONAL FINAL

Century ND 75.33, Grandview CO 60.66

With two new states respresented in the Final Four, it was the Patriots of Century (Bismarck, N.D.) that pulled away and made it to the national final. The difference in this matchup was in the field events, where Century outscored the Colorado champs 42.33 to 11.66. The fractions came from the pole vault, where Grandview's Ryan Lippelt was declared the winner at 12-9 and then three vaulters (Jackson Blake and Mateo Munoz Grandview, Caden Hight of Century) split the remaining four points. Century's army of throwers came up big, again. Led by Andrew Leingang, Century had five boys with season bests better than Grandview's Moosah Alsaffar in the shot put. Century had 15 boys better than Grandview's best in the discus. On the track, Grandview outscored Century 44-28 in the individual events. Chance Bowlinger of Century edged out Peter Fox to win the 800 meters 1:55.64 to 1:55.81. Fox won the 1,600 and was awarded the 3,200 meters as well, based on altitude. Grandview sprinters David Maldonado and Evan Johnson gave the Wolfpack an advantage in the sprints and led to a win in the 4x100 relay. Century countered with a victory in the 4x400.

EAST REGIONAL FINAL

Carmel IN 68, Carrollton GA 64

Carmel moved a step past its 2017 team that lost in the regional final to Franklin NJ and the Greyhounds are into the championship. Getting past a strong Carrollton team was no easy task. Zachary Cox gave Carmel an important lift in the hurdles events, winning the 110-meter highs and the 300 intermediates and teammate Colton Parker grabbed second-place points in the 300s. The closeness of the overall score was exemplified in a couple of field events. In the shot put, Carrollton's Montavioius Holts and Carmel's Evan Brehl tied for the win and split the first- and second-place points and Daniel Dukes of Carrollton took third. Carrollton had advantages in the pole vault, high jump and long jump, but didn't get a chance to use its triple jumpers because Indiana doesn't contest that event. Carrollton won a tight 4x100 relay 41.77 to 41.79, but Carmel took the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Carmel sophomore Kole Mathison came up big again for the Greyhounds as he beat Justin Parham in the 800 meters and then beat Collin Jones in the 1,600 and 3,200.
