Mountain View UT Emerges On Top In Utah Merge, Additional Regional and District Meet Results Shape Latest Rankings By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor Mid-week developments, including Tuesday's Utah state championships, caused ripples throughout this week's Top 30. As the meets become more and more important, the true strength of teams is coming into sharper focus. On Wednesday in Beaverton, Ore., the Jesuit OR boys put three runners under 15 minutes in the Metro League district meet, led by Jacob Nenow's 14:52. That tends to be a quick course, but the Crusaders ran faster than they did last year when they concluded the season at No. 3. Strong showings elsewhere by West Salem and Lincoln showed that Jesuit is going to have to show and work to win the state title next week at Lane Community College in Eugene. In Utah, Danny Simmons led American Fork to a bit of an upset win in the Class 6A final. In a state with so many good teams, and an off day by Herriman, the Cavemen delivered coach Timo Mostert his 10th state title. American Fork moves up to a season-high ranking of No. 11. But in the merge of results from all the final, it's Mountain View, the 5A champion, that came out slightly ahead. And the Bruins, led by Liam Heninger, are up to No. 9. The Utah state meet was a snapshot of where a loaded part of the country stands this week. With five teams in the top 22, they are sure to reshuffle again with the next opportunity at NXR Southwest. There are 12 state championship meets this weekend, including Indiana (No. 5 Carmel and No. 13 Zionsville), Colorado (No. 23 Valor Christian, No. 25 Cherokee Trail and No. 27 Niwot), Idaho (No. 14 Rocky Mountain) and Iowa (No. 24 Dowling Catholic). The news of Jimmy Wischusen's ankle injury caused Union Catholic NJ to fall back a bit, although the team is deep enough to function near top-20 level without him. The Vikings won the Union County Championships over a strong Westfield group, 44 to 56 last weekend. UC once seemed like a near-lock for a Nike Cross Nationals berth but now could be in a battle for the second spot behind rock-solid CBA. In California, San Clemente continued to impress with a Division 1-2 team sweepstakes victory at the Mt. SAC Invitational. Juan Chantaca led the team and the scoring five had just 35 seconds of separation. Wayzata of Minnesota has jumped back into the discussion as a top-20 team and potential Heartland region favorite after a strong effort at the Minnesota Section 6AAA meet. The scoring five split 35 seconds and scored 39 points. Top 30 |
