Although the unsanctioned presence of a former University of Texas athlete overshadowed the Class 6A boys race Oct. 28 at the state championship meet, when it came to the performance of the Flower Mound in the girls final, the spotlight belonged to Nicole Humphries, Samantha Humphries and Alexandra Fox.

The trio swept the top three spots in the Class 6A final to lead the Jaguars to a 42-51 victory against rival Southlake Carroll and a third consecutive team title.

The Humphries sisters, both juniors, were each credited with covering the 5-kilometer layout at Old Settlers Park in 17 minutes, 36.4 seconds, with the sophomore standout Fox clocking 17:48.6.

Ava Bushaw, a senior, finished fifth in 17:58.3 and junior Sylvia Schwedler secured seventh in 18:16.9 for Southlake Carroll, which had five scorers in the top 25.

Natalie Spangher took 23rd in 18:57.2 and Ava Cole placed 28th in 19:04.2 for Flower Mound, which will look to produce a similar effort Nov. 19 at NXR South at Bear Branch Park in The Woodlands, Texas.

Lucas Lovejoy demonstrated it could be a legitimate contender for an automatic berth at NXR South, or in strong consideration for an at-large bid, following a 28-85 victory against Boerne Champion in the Texas 5A final Oct. 29 in Round Rock.

The Leopards placed all five scorers in the top 11, led by sisters Amy Morefield (18:23.2) and Sara Morefield (18:24.2) finishing fifth and sixth. Freshman Camryn Benson took ninth in 18:34.3, followed by juniors Peyton Benson (18:35.8) and Kailey Littlefield (18:45.7) earning 10th and 11th, respectively.

Cuthbertson also added to its legacy with a fifth straight North Carolina state title, including the past two in Class 4A, with a 32-81 victory Nov. 5 against Cardinal Gibbons at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

Stella Kermes secured the individual crown, covering the 5-kilometer course in 17:40.94 for Cuthbertson, which became only the fourth girls program in North Carolina Prep history to win at least five straight state titles in any classification.

The Cavaliers had five scorers in the top 16, with fellow juniors Charlotte Bell (18:24.23) and Justine Preisano (18:31.36) supporting Kermes by finishing fifth and sixth, followed by Alyssa Preisano (18:33.08) grabbing ninth and fellow senior Lillian Nasta (19:06.19) achieving 16th for Cuthbertson, which is scheduled to compete Nov. 26 at NXR Southeast at WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C.

Prospect produced its finest performance of the season to win the Illinois 3A championship for the first time, relying on five scorers in the top 18 to prevail against York by a 39-58 margin at Detweiller Park.

Hailey Erickson, a senior, finished fifth in 17:37.50, sophomore Veronica Znajda secured sixth in 17:39.43 and freshman Meg Peterson earned eighth in 17:43.18 for Prospect, which had junior Lily Ginsberg take 13th in 17:54.81 and senior Cameron Kalaway grab 18th in 18:03.41.

York also had three competitors in the top 10, with senior Bria Bennis taking third in 17:19.56 and juniors Michaela Quinn (17:40.23) and Katherine Klimek (17:44.02) placing seventh and ninth, respectively.

But York had its next three athletes finish 26th, 27th and 28th overall, giving the advantage to Prospect.

The teams are expected to rematch Nov. 13 at NXR Midwest at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Wayzata captured its first Minnesota state crown since 2017 and the fifth in program history by defeating rival Minnetonka by a 39-89 margin in the Class AAA final at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Abbey Nechanicky achieved the fastest 5-kilometer performance at St. Olaf by clocking 16:47.61, leading five Wayzata scorers in the top 25.

Fellow seniors Teegan Anderson (18:18.96) and Grace Mignone (18:30.25) achieved ninth and 12th, respectively, with freshman Maddie Gullickson (18:33.28) taking 16th and sophomore Alyson Kleyman (19:04.28) finishing 22nd. Aubrey Smith, an eighth-grader, ran 19:12.54 and senior Grace Weber clocked 19:21.06 to also place in the top 40 overall for Wayzata, which has established itself as the favorite entering NXR Heartland on Nov. 13 at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Jesuit High from Oregon continued to build momentum toward NXR Northwest on Nov. 13 at Eagle Island State Park in Idaho, capturing the Class 6A championship with a 40-98 triumph against Lincoln.

The presence of sophomore Emma Bennett in the lineup was significant in Jesuit’s victory, giving the Crusaders five scorers in the top 20.

Sophomore Maura O’Scannlain took third at the Lane Community College course in 18:00.5, with junior Liliana Hudnut finishing fifth in 18:21.5, senior Maggie Bennett placing seventh in 18:31.4, junior Amalie Bell achieving 12th in 18:40.4 and Emma Bennett clocking 18:59.1 for 19th place overall.

Mason High continued to build momentum ahead of NXR Midwest, holding off Hilliard Davidson by a 75-91 margin Nov. 5 in Obetz to capture the Ohio Division 1 championship.

Freshman Efa Paschka led Mason by placing sixth in 18:20.7 and senior Grace McKay earned eighth in 18:31.8 for Mason, which had five scorers in the top 40.

Mason took third Oct. 1 in the USA Race of Champions at Nike XC Town Twilight at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, finishing behind Prospect and Indiana state champion Noblesville.
