ASICS professional Taliyah Brooks, the 2018 NCAA Division 1 indoor pentathlon champion at Arkansas, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss the event she coordinated June 20 along with Razorbacks' junior Markus Ballengee entitled "Fayetteville in Living Color" that promoted unity, inclusivity and also brought awareness to the community about "Black Lives Matter" and the racial injustice and inequality facing African-Americans, not only in Northwest Arkansas, but throughout the country. Brooks, 25, shares the details that went into organizing the first event of its kind in Fayetteville, as well as the mural that was constructed by local artists to commemorate the gathering. She also reflects on an Instagram post she authored May 31 entitled "Being Biracial in America" and the challenges her African-American father and brother have faced throughout her upbringing, including having guns pulled on them and their lives threatened, as well as their house burning down while living in a predominantly white neighborhood. Brooks also revisits being taunted with racial slurs as she and teammates were walking with a recruit following an Arkansas home football game. She examines the importance of elections this year at the local and federal levels, and how voting can be an opportunity to create significant change and reform, especially within communities and cities. Brooks also expresses the importance of athletes using their voices and platforms to educate not only their sponsors, but the sport as a whole to racial, social and human rights issues globally, much of which was covered in her 2018 Master's Thesis entitled, "Something to Say About Injustice: Black Male Sport Protest and Narrative." Brooks also looks back on the past two years since winning the 2018 indoor pentathlon title, which has seen her progress affected by injuries, and how she remains optimistic and motivated for a strong comeback in the heptathlon at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials.
