Florida State All-American Lauren Ryan, a top 10 all-time indoor competitor for Australia in the women's indoor mile, 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss elevating to the No. 4 performer in collegiate indoor history following her 8:47.88 effort Feb. 11 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Ryan reflects on her 15:40.40 performance Dec. 4 in the 5,000 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston and how meaningful the track and venue have become to her and so many Australian athletes over the years. She shares how significant it is for her to qualify for the Division 1 Indoor Championships for the first time after placing 26th at the NCAA cross country final Nov. 20 at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee. Ryan explains how proud she is of her range, which also includes a 4:36.76 mile Jan. 29 at the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson, and how grateful she is to join Heidi See as the only two Australian female athletes to rank in the top 10 in the country's history in all three indoor events. She reflects on her time spent in Australia during the pandemic and being able to race the 10,000 meters for the first time in January 2021 and clocking 32:16.11 in Melbourne, as well as achieving personal-best efforts in the outdoor 1,500, mile and 3,000. Ryan also revisits suffering a tear in her calf muscle and not being able to race to desired level at the Australian Championships, resulting in her missing out on qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics. She expresses gratitude for her opportunities to compete unattached in the United States last spring, and her significant improvement in the 5,000, including a personal-best 15:22.48 on May 29 at the Portland Track Festival. Ryan, who is expected to race the mile Feb. 24-26 at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships at Virginia Tech, looks ahead to a busy schedule following the Division 1 championship meet March 11-12 at the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala., and her chance to represent Australia on March 18 in the 3,000-meter final at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, followed by her country's national championships March 26-April 3 in Sydney, and the potential to race April 2 in the 5,000.
