Autumn Wilson, a Georgia signee and the reigning Nike Outdoor Nationals 100-meter dash champion and Nike Indoor Nationals 60-meter winner, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing for the United States in the 4x100-meter relay Aug. 4 and 5 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. Wilson, a graduate of St. Dominic Savio in Texas who swept the 100 and 200 titles at the TAPPS State Championships, took third June 24 in the 100 final an all-conditions best 11.14 seconds at the USATF U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., to secure her spot in the 4x100 relay pool. Wilson is expected to be joined by Mia Brahe-Pedersen of Lake Oswego High and Lily Jones of Roosevelt High in Oregon, along with Shawnti Jackson of Wakefield High in North Carolina, as well as college athletes Jayla Jamison of South Carolina, Iyana Gray of Texas Arlington and Alyssa Colbert of Northern Arizona. She examines the opportunity to compete against Jamaica, which set a World U20 record by clocking 42.94 seconds last year in Kenya, and the potential to race against sisters Tia Clayton and Tina Clayton. Wilson shares how the American athletes have gained inspiration from watching the U.S. 4x100 lineup of Melissa Jefferson, Abby Steiner, Jenna Prandini and Twanisha Terry prevail against Jamaica at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon. She reflects on how meaningful it has been to race against Brahe-Pedersen and Jackson during her high school career, and how significant it was to have three prep competitors all running all-conditions marks under 11.15 in the same race in Oregon, in addition to how valuable it was to be part of a pair of professional 60-meter races in February in Kentucky a running a personal-best 7.26 in both events. Wilson analyzes the role not only her mother, but additional female mentors have played during her career, and how much she is looking forward to being coached by Caryl Smith Gilbert at Georgia and having the opportunity to race as a freshman at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. She also speaks about how instrumental her faith has been, especially during the past year, and being able to rebound from the passing of her grandmother in order to win the Nike Outdoor 100 title and qualify for Team USA to compete internationally for the first time.
