Jillian Stafford, the runner-up in the women's hammer throw at the USATF U20 Championships and a graduate of Dana Hills High in California entering her sophomore year at UCLA, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss not being allowed to compete at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia because she is not vaccinated against COVID-19. Stafford, who achieved a personal-best 195-3 (59.52m) on June 23 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., was replaced on the American roster by third-place finisher Kali Terza of Kennesaw State to compete Aug. 3 in the hammer throw qualifying round, along with USATF U20 champion Emily Fink of the U.S. Military Academy. She shares her quest to get an exemption from USATF and World Athletics that would allow her to participate, but ultimately being denied. Stafford, 19, has never tested positive for COVID-19, despite having teammates and roommates who are vaccinated and have still experienced testing positive during the past year. She shares how in addition to her beliefs, ethics and values, her decision not to get vaccinated in order to compete in Colombia has been a spiritual one and how her faith has helped her remain resilient and allowed her to persevere, despite the challenging circumstances. Stafford also explains how her faith has been instrumental in helping her remain patient throughout her freshman season, despite being compromised by a back injury that limited her ability to train and compete. She expresses gratitude for the support of her family and UCLA throws coach Sean Denard, and how meaningful it was to throw at Hayward Field two days before her 26-year-old brother Justin Stafford placed eighth in the men's hammer throw final at the USATF Championships with a personal-best 239-8 (73.07m). Stafford also examines the collaboration her brother has with RVCA and how exciting the partnership is for his professional career. She also reflects on the American women earning two medals in the hammer throw at the World Athletics Championships, with Brooke Andersen capturing gold and Janee' Kassanavoid taking bronze in Eugene, along with fellow Pac-12 competitor Camryn Rogers of Cal securing silver for Canada. Stafford also speaks about Eats By Jill, her platform to showcase recipes, along with helpful tips about dieting, nutrition and recovery, and her quest to surpass the 200-foot mark next year.
