Analee Weaver, the reigning USATF U20 champion in the women's 5,000 meters and entering her sophomore year at Utah State following a transfer from Brigham Young, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing Aug. 6 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. Weaver, a state champion in cross country and track along with earning All-America honors during her prep career at Stillwater Area High in Minnesota, won the 5,000 title June 23 in a personal-best 16:25.67 at the USATF U20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., along with placing second June 25 in the 3,000 final in 9:41.65. Weaver is scheduled to be joined in the 5,000 by Heidi Nielson of Arkansas, who is also racing the 3,000 for the United States. She expresses gratitude for training with Utah State coach Artie Gulden and also receiving advice about international competition from former Aggies All-American Dillon Maggard. Weaver speaks about the support she has received from family, friends and teammates, along with people in both Utah and Minnesota, during her preparation for racing outside of the U.S. for the first time. She explains how beneficial it has been to run in Utah, and how coach Gulden has structured her track workouts to also balance summer cross country training. Weaver shares why Utah State has been a good fit for her, in addition to what she learned during her first year of collegiate competition at BYU. She examines the challenges of racing against athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, and her motivation to represent her country well. Weaver speaks about the inspiration gained from watching U.S. athletes compete in Oregon at the World Athletics Championships, and being able to wear the same gear during her experience in Colombia. She analyzes the potential for the Utah State women's team during the fall cross country season and how her move to Logan has helped in rediscovering her passion for running and competition.
