Seabury Hall girls deliver first title for Maui

State Meet Highlights

The Hawaii state championships get a big shot in the arm from philanthropist Don Takaki, CEO of Island Movers. (The meet is sponsored by Island Movers, a trucking and moving company). The championships are a single division and take place at the Kamehemeha School Kapalama campus on Oahu.

Top Performances:

- Jac Hebert of Punahou broke the state record in the 1,500 with 4:01.23.

- Alyssa Bettendorf of Seabury Hall, who earlier this year broke state records in the 100 and 200, tripled by winning those two events as well as the 400.

- Dakota Grossman of Seabury Hall won the 1,500 and 3,000 and placed third in the 800. She has made her stamp on the state as one of Hawaii's all-time best distance runners and has signed with Utah.

- Diamond Briscoe of Pearl City was second to Bettendorf in the 200 and 400. Briscoe has also run under the old state record in the 200 this season.

- Sophomore Kaeo Kruse of Kamehameha Oahu chose to focus his attention on the 3,000 meters and it paid off with a meet record win in 8:43.12. (The all-time state record of 8:33.36 was set in 2002 by Todd Iacovelli at the Stanford Invitational).

- Sophomore Emma Taylor of Hawaii Prep was a double winner in the hurdles events.

Top Teams:

Seabury Hall – led by Bettendorf and Grossman – won the first girls state championship for Maui and did it handily with 73 points.

The host school, Kamehameha Kapalama, won the boys title with 83 points. Dylan Kane, winner of the 100 and 200, was part of that effort.

Top Competition: The girls 400 meters pitted two of the fastest girls in state history – Bettendorf and Briscoe – and didn't disappoint. Bettendorf edged Briscoe in a photo finish 55.98 to 55.99 as both of them made the US top 100.

Record-breakers: Although Kaeo came in with the fastest time in the state in the 1,500 (4:02.49), he decided to focus on the 3,000 instead. That opened the door for Jac Hebert, who broke the meet record in the event held by Pierce Murphy (2011) with 4:01.23. He did have someone to run with, however. Davis Kaahanui of KS-Kapalama finished a closed second in 4:03.46.
