With the exception of a few events, Friday was filled with preliminaries at the Louie Bing Classic at Traz Powell Stadium in Miami, Fla.

Miami Norland sophomore Tyrese Cooper dashed his way quite comfortably to the top of the lists Friday afternoon, finishing second in the 100 meters behind American Heritage junior Anthony Schwartz in 10.70 and third in the 200 meters behind Miramar’s Jamal Walton and Schwartz in 21.49. He also finished first in the 400, running 47.7.

Cooper claimed meet records in all three events last year, and he’ll be more than likely to attempt to break all three again during Saturday’s final.

Miami Southridge’s girls 4x800 relay ran 9:35 to win, with Miami Northwestern taking second in 9:37. The times are currently US#1 and 2 as the outdoor season is just getting started.

The  Lady Bulls of Miami Northwestern in their usual fashion led the rest of the field in the 4x100, clocking 46.77, now the fastest time in the nation.

The boys from American Heritage, which featured Schwartz on the anchor, also ran a nation-leading time in the boys race.

Miami Northwestern’s Thomas Burns led the field in the 300-meter hurdles running 38.08 ─ 1.14 seconds off of his time last year, and 2.02 off of his brother’s 2012 meet record.

Seneca Milledge of Dunbar competed in the long jump and won with 22-11.25. His jump puts him in a three-way tie for 12th on the meet’s all-time list.

Belen Jesuit junior Joshua Collins took the winning title in the boys 3200 invitational race, running 9:32.

All eight of the qualifiers in the girls 200 meters ran faster that the early season US#1 time of 25.70, with Karimah Davis of Palm Beach Central running the fastest time of the day, 24.30.

Seven out of the eight were under 25 seconds. Twanisha Terry of Miami Northwestern, who set the meet record last year, came up second in 24.51.

Walton led the way during the boys 200 meters, finishing with the top time of 21.12. He was followed by Schwartz in 21.48.

Miami Southridge senior Kayla Johnson took the top spot in the girls 800, running a nation-leading 2:15 ─ five seconds ahead of second-place qualifier, Ayoola Gbolade. Johnson also hold the meet record in the event of 2:09, set last year.
