Claudia Lane Earns Both of This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Claudia Lane

With 59.56 percent of the vote, Claudia Lane won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Camila Noe with her second-place tally of 23.67 percent.

Lane, a Malibu CA junior, continued her string of high-level performances Saturday at the 70th Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational. Running in the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race, Lane powered away from the field and broke the 2.93-mile course record by 11 seconds, running 15:49. The previous record was 16:00 set in 2012 by two-time Nike Cross Nationals champion Sarah Baxter.

Lane's season got off to a late start due to tightness in her right hip. She made her season debut Oct. 4. However, Lane has shown little sign of the injury that kept her from competing during September. Mt. SAC was only her third race of the season.

Editors’ Choice: Claudia Lane

There were several top performances this week. Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya broke her own world record in the half marathon Sunday in Spain by one second (1:04:51). It was the second time she broke the record and her sixth world record this year. In her race, she was paced by marathon great Eliud Kipchoge. That fact makes her performance slightly less impressive.

Camila Noe, the Bozeman MT senior, also had a top performance. She set the 5-kilometer course record at the Montana state meet Saturday, running 17:28. Montana moved to racing 5K this year from 3 miles. Noe ran with the other top girls (Tiahna Vladic of Billings Senior and Annie Hill of Glacier) early in the race, but eventually pulled ahead to win by 37 seconds.

However, the editors' choice award goes to Lane. She led the Division 1-2 individual sweepstakes race from the gun Saturday and steadily increased her lead throughout the race.

Lane ran her opening 800 meters in 2:22 before passing the first mile in 4:59. At the crossover point, just past halfway in the race, Lane had an eight-second edge on Baxter's record run.

Lane would go on to hit the 2-mile mark in 10:36 before completing the 2.93-mile course in 15:49. She became the first girl to break 16 minutes on the course.

Lane finished 53 seconds ahead of second-place Lauren Peurifoy, a junior at Martin Luther King CA. Peurifoy's time of 16:42 ranks her #12 on the Mt. SAC 2.93-mile course all-time.

From here, Lane will move into the championship portion of the season, leading toward the California State Meet on Nov. 25. Depending on whether she races Friday at the Ventura County Championships, she is scheduled to compete three or four times before looking to defend her Division 4 state title.
