Grant Fisher, Katelyn Tuohy Earn Performance of the Week Honors - 10/31/17Published by
Fisher and Tuohy Earn This Week's Performance of the Week AwardsTrack and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection. Readers’ Choice: Grant FisherWith 24.4 percent of the vote, Grant Fisher won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating Katelyn Tuohy with her second-place tally of 16.43 percent. The Stanford junior won his first Pac-12 cross country title Friday at the Springfield Country Club, hosted by the University of Oregon. Fisher, along with his Stanford teammates, hung back early in the 8-kilometer race. Throughout the first half, Fisher was nowhere to be seen as he relaxed and kept a careful watch on the race in front of him. After the 5K mark, the race began to heat up with many of the top runners moving up. Fisher followed suit, pulling his teammates with him. The first big move was made by Mahmoud Moussa of Washington. Fisher tucked in behind him and waited to make his own move. However, over the final 800 meters, Colorado's Joe Klecker made his bid for the win. Fisher, again, tucked in behind. The last move was Fisher's. He passed Klecker on the final bend before the finish, finding a gear Klecker could not match. Fisher crossed the finish line three seconds clear of Klecker, finishing in 23 minutes, 45 seconds. Fisher became the first athlete to succeed Oregon's Edward Cheserek, who won four consecutive Pac-12 cross country titles. He also led his team to the team title, aided by the third- and fourth-place finishes of Steven Fahy and Alex Ostberg. Colorado had won all six team titles since the Buffaloes joined the conference in 2011. Stanford captured its first title since a Pac-10 championship in 2010. Watch Fisher's post-race interview. Editors’ Choice: Katelyn TuohyIt was a busy week this week with almost every collegiate conference holding conference championship meets and 12 state meets taking place. However, this week's editor's choice award goes to Katelyn Tuohy for her record-shattering run at the Rockland County Championship. The North Rockland NY sophomore opened her season Sept. 8 on the same Bear Mountain course. On that day, she ran faster than Aisling Cuffe's course record of 16:27 (from 2010), running 16:25 for 3 miles. However, several cones were misplaced that day, allowing Cuffe to keep her record. However, Tuohy's run last week left no doubt as to who holds the course record. Tuohy continued her impressive season, running 15:55 on the Bear Mountain 3-mile course, taking 30 seconds off her own time and 32 seconds off Cuffe's record. The year Cuffe ran 16:27 at Bear Mountain, she went on to win the Foot Locker Championships. A similar postseason performance may be in the cards for Tuohy, but she would need to beat defending Foot Locker champion Claudia Lane first, assuming both line up in the same postseason meet, which isn't likely. Tuohy is expected to return to Nike Cross Nationals, where she placed 13th last year, and Lane has expressed a desire to pursue back-to-back Foot Locker titles.
