South Carolina State Meet Recap 2022 - T'Mars McCallum Blasts US#1 10.13 100m

T'Mars McCallum Ties No. 7 All-Time With State Record And US#1 10.13 To Go With 20.71 200 And 24-8.50 Long Jump

Call it home track advantage. Friday, the Spring Valley boys won the 5A South Carolina High School League State Track and Field Championship on their home track. With 58 points, Spring Valley secured the program’s first title since 2013. 

Carolina Forest senior T’mars McCallum enjoyed a spectacular performance, setting state records in the 100 (US#1 10.13) and 200 (US#8 20.71). He also won the long jump with 24-8.50 and anchored the 4x100 relay to an all-time state best 40.72. 

McCallum's wind-legal 100 result moves him into a tie for seventh all-time in the U.S.

On the field, Randy Kelly of Blythewood cleared 6-10 to win the 5A high jump title. 

In girls 5A action, J.L. Mann won the team championship with 84 points. Senior Madison Roush won the 800 (2:17.63) for J.L Mann and the 4x800 picked up a victory as well. 

4A - Spring Valley 

The Greenville boys and girls track and field teams made it a program sweep on Saturday, claiming the 4A crowns in a meet which endured weather delays. Sophomore Knox Young led the way for the boys, winning the 800 (1:57.93) and 1,600 (4:25.09), while the 4x800 won in 8:08.61.

On the track, Catawba Ridge’s Andre Hodge won the 100 meters (10.40) and 200 (21.20).

On the girls side, Keniya Walker paced Greenville to a state title with a win in the 400 (57.51) and runner-up in the 200 (25.15). Greenville also won the 4x1 (47.23).

Westwood junior Brianna Rodriguez picked up three wins, with the 200 meter dash (24.63), 100 (14:20) and 400 (1:00.81) hurdle titles. 

3A - Lower Richland High School

The Wren boys held off Seneca 65-63.50, to repeat as 3A champions. The Seneca girls repeated as 3A champions, scoring 90 points.

On the track, Auburn commit Ian Myers of Brookland-Cayce’s, won the 100 in 10.27, tied for US#15, and won the 200 in 20.66, US#7. 

Senior Jackson Livingston of Mid-Carolina won the javelin title in a US#25 throw of 197-1.

Seneca was paced by sophomore Micayla Collins’ wins in the 200 (24.67) and 400 (57.13) and was part of the winning 4x100 (49.46).

2A - Lower Richland High School

The Greer Middle College Charter boys scored 92 points to edge out defending champion Philip Simmons (87.40) for the 2A title. The team dominated the distance events, scoring a combined 50 points in the 3,200, 1,600 and 800, and winning the 4x800 relay in a class record time of 8:26.69. 

The Philip Simmons girls defended their 2A title with 129 points. NaJhyrai Watson was a force on the track for Philip Simmons winning the 100 (11.74), 200 (24.33) and the 400 meters (58.77) all meet records. She was also part of the winning 4x100 (48.76) that set a class record. Philip Simmons captured the top three positions in the pole vault as Madison Jent won with 11-6 for another class record. 

1A  - Lower Richland High School

Southside Christian’s Grayson Gibbons led his team to a repeat 1A state title as he dominated the distance events, winning the 3,200 (11:18.31), 1,600 (4:56.96) and 800, where he ran class record time of 2:03.96. He also ran on the winning 4x800 relay, which set a class record of 8:44.47. 

In girls 1A action, Whale Branch Early College dominated with 118 points, winning the 4x100 in a meet record time of 48.42 seconds. Whale Branch’s Talaijah Bartley won the 100 hurdles in (15.52), while teammate Kynew Barnwell claimed the 400 hurdles title (1:05.41), both were class records. 

On the track, Estill’s Kadejah Smoak won the girls 100 (12.27) and 200 (25.89).

Team Champions

Class 5A: Spring Valley boys 58 points; J.L. Mann girls 84 points - RESULTS

Class 4A: Greenville boys 94 points; Greenville girls 102 points - RESULTS

Class 3A: Wren boys 65 points; Seneca girls 90 points - RESULTS

Class 2A: Greer Middle College Charter boys 92 points; Philip Simmons girls 129 points - RESULTS

Class 1A: Southside Christian boys 127 points; Whale Branch Early College girls 118 - RESULTS
