Hall flies faster, farther than anyone in Maine

State Meet Highlights

In Maine, high school track and field is a bit more low-key than other places. There are some talented athletes in the state – like Dan Curts and Kate Hall – but the season is built upon dual meets and the state championship A, B and C meets are held in different locations. The Class A meet at Windham High was held on a six-lane track. Still, there was some quality worth celebrating.

Top Performances:

- Kate Hall, a junior from Lake Region, might just be the best high school track athlete in state history. She smashed the state meet records in the 100 (11.81), 200 (24.36) and long jump (19-0.50), also won the triple jump with 36-5.50. She scored all of her team's 40 points. And Hall used the state meet as a steppingstone to New Balance Nationals, where she performed even better.

- Dan Curts of Ellsworth had a very good race against Will Shafer of Gray in the 1600, running 4:09.88 as both runners broke the Class B record – and were 20 seconds ahead of anybody else. Curts also won the 800 in 1:56.41 and the 3200, jogging it in 9:42.51.

- Josef Holt-Andrews of Telstar, the other national-class runner in Maine, picked up titles in Class C. He won the 1600 in 4:24.03 and the 3200 in 9:32.62.

- Kaitlin Saulter from Herman won the Class B 400 in a state meet record time of 56.95. She was also second to Hall in the 200.

- Aleta Looker of Ellsworth didn't have to work terribly hard to win the 800, taking it in 2:17.71. Later, she would run six seconds faster than that to break the Maine record.

- Isaiah Harris, a junior from Lewiston, won the Class A 800 in a meet record time of 1:52.96 – and won the championship race by nearly 10 seconds. He also won the 200 in 22.76.

- Synclaire Tasker, a senior at Brewer, won Class A titles in the 100 hurdles (15.35), 300 hurdles (45.47) and triple jump (37-3.25).

- Kristin Sandreuter of Greely won the 1600 and 3200 double in Class B.

- Jack Bouchard, a sophomore from York, had a winning mark in the javelin of 186-8.

Top TeamsThe Cheverus boys won the Class A boys title with 99 points; the Thornton Academy girls were victorious with 65. In Class B, it was a sweep for Waterville (108.25 points for girls, 92.50 for boys). In Class C, the Orono girls (102) and Lisbon boys (67) prevailed.

Top Competition: The matchup in the Class A 200 meters was an interesting one. Isaiah Harris of Lewiston was the 800 champion in a meet record 1:52.96 and Jake Dixon of Cheverus was the 400 champion in 48.93. So both juniors were determined to show their top-end speed in the 200. And it was Harris taking it in a photo finish, 22.7506 to 22.7591.

Record-breaker: Kate Hall is the greatest sprinter and jumper in Maine history and she still has another year to go. She is the state record holder in her three primary events. But Maine had more record-breakers this year (not necessarily at the state meet). Dan Curts became the best 2-miler in state history, and Isaiah Harris and Aleta Looker broke the 800 records. Cheverus also broke the all-time mark in the boys 4x400 (at New Englands).
