Taoufik Makhloufi Out of IAAF World ChampionshipsPublished by
Three-Time Olympic Medalist Makhloufi to Miss World Championships with InjuryBy Adam Kopet, DyeStat Editor Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports reports that a calf injury will force Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria to miss the IAAF World Outdoor Championships, scheduled for Aug. 4-13 in London. Makhloufi first came to prominence as a surprise winner of the 1,500 meters at the 2012 Olympics. Four years later in Rio, he earned silver medals in the 800 and 1,500. It was the first time an athlete had medaled in both the 800 and 1,500 since Seb Coe in 1984. The last time Makhloufi raced was in September. Had he been planning to compete in London, he would have needed to earn a qualifying time by Sunday, the end of the qualifying window. The only remaining large scale meet left on the calendar before the World Championships is the Monaco Diamond League meeting Friday. More news |
