Distance and Throws Earn This Week's Performance of the Week Awards

Track and field fans voiced their choices in this week's DyeStat's Performance of the Week poll, while DyeStat's editors made their own selection.

Readers’ Choice: Katelynne Hart

With 31.78 percent of the vote, Katelynne Hart won our Readers’ Choice vote, beating the Great Oak CA girls with their second-place tally of 13.95 percent.

The Glenbard West IL sophomore made her outdoor debut at the Arcadia Invitational, running in the invitational 3,200 meters Saturday night with a dominating performance.

Hart led from the start, bringing the pack through the first lap in about 72 seconds. As she continued to push the pace in the second lap, only Buchanan CA sophomore Corie Smith tried to go with her. However, Hart broke Smith by the end of the third lap and was on her own the rest of the way.

Passing the halfway point in about 5:00, Hart was on pace to possibly break the 10-minute mark. But the next three laps saw her fall slightly off pace. With a lap to go, she was five seconds off pace. Hart launched into her kick, racing the clock.

In the end, Hart missed breaking the 10-minute barrier in her solo effort, but she knocked nearly nine seconds off her personal best, breaking the tape in 10:02.56. Hart won by nearly seven seconds over Saugus CA senior Mariah Castillo, who herself set a 24-second personal best.

Editors’ Choice: Maggie Ewen

Maggie Ewen, the Arizona State senior, had a big weekend at the 39th Sun Angel Classic. Already known as a multi-dimensional thrower at the NCAA level, having earned All-America first-team honors in three events at the 2017 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships, Ewen improved her personal bests in the shot put, discus and hammer, setting collegiate-leading marks in all three.

Ewen started Friday with the hammer, her best event. She broke her own collegiate record on her third-round throw with a mark of 241-6 (73.61m). Then she broke it again in the fifth round with a throw of 244-6 (74.53m). Her sixth and final attempt was not an improvement, but it made for three throws over her previous record. Ewen now owns the top four marks in collegiate history.

However, Ewen was just getting started with her superb weekend. Next up was the discus Saturday. Ewen finished second at the NCAA Championships last year. She improved her personal best with a third-round throw of 201-0 (61.27m). That mark improved on Shadae Lawrence's collegiate-leading mark by seven inches.

Ewen ended her weekend in the shot put. All five of her legal valid throws surpassed the collegiate lead, held by Ashlie Blake of UCLA. This time it was Ewen's second attempt that topped the list, the shot flying out to 63-0.75 (19.22m).

In addition to breaking her collegiate record in the hammer and setting three collegiate-leading marks, Ewen is now the world leader in the hammer throw and shot put.
